Blessings and greetings,
I have just received your letter from this Monday and I hasten to respond, for I was surprised by its beginning.
It is a mitzvah* of the Torah* to wish one another long days and good years. Insofar as this is an obligation, there is necessarily good in it — not only material but also spiritual. I therefore willingly and joyfully accept the mission of bringing such a request (formulated in the addressee's letter) to the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.
However, you also make another request in your letter (a request for a blessing for the coming of Moshiach*). Now, one of the thirteen fundamental principles of faith is to await, each day, the coming of our righteous Moshiach*, who will bring us out of exile* and lead us — souls clothed in bodies — to our Holy Land*. In this matter, there is therefore no place to make a request (one must be certain that he can arrive at any moment).
Consequently, may Hashem fulfill the request that is desirable (the first one), granting you long days, good and pleasant years, as well as to your wife. You will disseminate Chassidus* in your city — in general, and that which concerns my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, in particular. As chapter 5 of the Tanya* explains, one thereby brings about a wondrous unification, the like of which cannot be found in this material world.
In this way, we will be able — souls clothed in bodies — to attach ourselves to my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, through his teaching and his directives, for which he gave of himself entirely. Thus one will bond not only with his Nefesh* (the part of the soul that is the source of physical existence) but also with his Ruach* (the part that is the source of emotions), Neshamah* (the part that is the source of intellect), Chayah* (the part that transcends the body and is revealed in it only at special moments), and Yechidah* (the essence of the soul, a spark of Divinity carried within each person), as indicated in Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 27, and its commentary.
I am enclosing a pamphlet presenting the continuation of the account of the imprisonment of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*. He himself composed this text, and you will surely make its content available to the widest audience. The public merit depends on you.
With my blessing for long days, good years, and for giving good news,
