Blessings and greetings,
I am responding to the question you pose in your letter of 20 Sivan. You no doubt know that a Jew has the obligation to bind himself to his fellow, in accordance with the mitzvah* that enjoins him to love him, as explained in the Sefer HaMitzvos* of the Tzemach Tzedek* (the Derech Mitzvosecha*, on the mitzvah* of Ahavas Yisrael*). The Alter Rebbe* says at the beginning of chapter 32 (of the Tanya*) that "all (the souls) are alike and have one Father."
When one is at a distance, the best way to fulfill this mitzvah* is to study the same portion of the Torah* (see letter no. 3470), as explained in the Tanya*, at the beginning of chapter 5, and to influence others to do the same. Indeed, "the Holy One, blessed be He, acts measure for measure" (in the manner in which a person acts toward Him).
No doubt you observe the three daily studies that concern everyone and were instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. They cover the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya* and are well known. This (the observance of these studies) is also connected to what has just been said (and is likewise a means of attaching oneself to the Rebbe*).
With my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
