Blessings and greetings,
I am responding to your undated letter. You speak of your son and tell me that you are thinking of having him learn a trade. Indeed, you explain that you went into debt in order to move. You therefore cannot consider arranging his marriage, which would cost you several thousand pounds.
Reflect upon the beginning and the end of your letter! To find a new house, it seemed justified to you to go into debt. Before, you already had one, but the one you have now is preferable to it. On the other hand, when it comes to fulfilling the mitzvah* of "you shall teach them to your children" and then marrying your son — precepts that are entrusted to the father's responsibility, according to our Sages* — it seems obvious to you not only to do nothing but, even more, "not even to think about it," to use your own expression.
You have lived in Yerushalayim* for many years. You are well aware that those who are truly poor, Heaven forbid, also marry off their children in recent months, and even strive to keep them in the tent of Torah*. Among them are also people who are unable to pay the thousands of pounds that an apartment costs.
This is precisely how the evil inclination* operates. At first, you yourself were in the tent of Torah* all day long. Then, for various reasons, you went to seek your livelihood elsewhere and became an employee. Obviously, your study of the revealed part of Torah* and of Chassidus*, the fervor of your prayer, suffered as a result.
But the evil inclination* is not content with all of this, and it now wishes the same principle to apply to your son as well. It therefore tells him that he must do the same, even though he is not yet established and his father underwent this change at a much more advanced age.
How opaque is the veil! For everything just said is perfectly evident, yet one does not recognize the true nature of events and seeks to give them a different interpretation.
In practical terms, one should discuss with the administration of the Yeshivah* whether your son could undertake studies to become a Rav* or a Shochet*, which will suit him far better. Hashem will grant him success.
I send you my blessing that your son know true advancement and that his father do the same. May Hashem grant that you return to the level that was yours a few years ago, or even surpass it.
With my blessing,
