To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav* Mordechai Tzvi (Rav M. T. Greenwald),

Blessings and greetings,

I have finally received your letter of the first day of Rosh Chodesh* Tammuz*, which followed a long silence. Thank Hashem, all is well with you. May Hashem grant that this be so even more abundantly, and that you experience plenty in all domains, as explained at the end of Midrash* Esther Rabbah*.

Concerning the young boy you mention (who, presumably, disturbs the rest of his class), two points must be entirely clear. On the one hand, the collective harm overrides the individual interest. Consequently, if his presence causes harm to the others, it is not possible to endanger them in this way. On the other hand, our Sages* speak of "one who saves a Jewish soul" (who "is considered as if he saved the entire world"), and it is obvious that this applies to this young boy as well. One must therefore try, by all means, to place him in a ray of light.

From the way you describe his situation, it seems that there is also, on his part, a pathological condition. This means that his negative tendencies can, at least partially, be rectified through medical treatment. A specialist physician in this field should be consulted — perhaps even, initially, without his knowledge. Only afterward would they meet, in the manner this physician deems appropriate.

It is surely unnecessary to remind you of what I have written to the schools under my influence. One must prepare, sufficiently in advance, material — provisions for the road — for the students during the vacation period. It would be good not to sever the connection with them entirely during this time. On the contrary, during this period they are freed from secular studies, and activity in the sacred domain can therefore be increased.

In practice, one can observe that what is said incidentally — that is, not within the formal framework of a class but in the course of a discussion or a walk — is far better received, better and more easily understood.

With my blessing,
