Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 28 Sivan, in which you briefly describe your life and your current situation, as you tell me that you are serving in the military.

As you know, obedience and discipline are fundamental in the army of men. Sometimes, one may at first not understand their importance. But subsequently, anyone who reasons correctly will very quickly become aware of their necessity — even though the officer is a man of flesh and blood, comparable to the soldier himself. How much more is this the case for the armies of Hashem, to which every Jew belongs. The instructions come from the Commander of these armies — the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He.

In the army of men, the chief of staff does not customarily visit each soldier personally to transmit his orders without an intermediary. He communicates them through officers who are closer to the soldier. Nevertheless, these officers themselves have been appointed by the chief of staff and can therefore represent him.

The same is true of the matter at hand: those who received the Torah* — the Sages* of the Mishnah*, of the Gemara*, the masters of Israel who teach the precepts of our Torah*, the Torah* of Hashem — all of these transmit the instructions of the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He.

In the army of men, obedience and discipline are not meant to crush the soldier, humiliate him, or harm him. On the contrary, the more deeply he internalizes these values, the more quickly he will be promoted and will experience good in every domain.

How much more must this be the case when it involves accepting the sovereignty of Hashem. This acceptance is expressed through the adoption of Torah* and mitzvos* in daily life. It is surely unnecessary to say more.

You have the merit of having become acquainted, at least to some extent, with the light emanating from Chassidus*. You are aware of its teachings and customs. You must therefore put them into practice, including in the army. You further have the merit and the responsibility of making them known to your friends in your brigade and in your battalion. You must be the symbol and the example of someone from a family like yours, who spent some time at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*. Nothing can withstand the will, and if you truly desire it, you will carry out this mission with success.

You surely have a fixed time each day to study the revealed part of the Torah*, Chassidus*, and especially the halachos* necessary for daily life.

Concerning your personal question — that is, the proposals of matches* being suggested to you — it would indeed be good to give them attention. Moreover, you tell me that those who make these proposals are your friends, belonging to the youth of the Chabad* association.

May Hashem, Who extends His Providence* to each individual, guide you on the path He deems right, materially and spiritually alike.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ח סיון, בו כותב ראשי פרקים מדברי ימי חייו ומצבו עתה אשר נמצא בצבא וכו'.

ובודאי למותר לעוררו, אשר כמו בצבא בשר ודם בעיקר תלוי במשמעת דקבלת עול, ואם אפילו בזמן הראשון אינם מבינים כ"כ ההכרח בזה, הרי במשך זמן קצר כל מי ששכל בריא לו יווכח לדעת ההכרח בזה אפילו כלפי מפקד בו"ד בערכו, מכש"כ וק"ו ועאכו"כ שכן הוא בהנוגע לכל אחד מישראל שהם צבאות השם יתברך בהנוגע לפקודות של המצביא הראשי הוא ממה"מ הקב"ה. וכמו שבמשל הרי אין מדרך המצביא הראשי לבוא לכל אחד ואחד מהחילים ולמסור לו הפקודה בלי כל ממוצע, אלא מוסרם הוא ע"י פקידים הקרובים במעמדם ומצבם להחיל, וכיון שהוא נתמנה מהמצביא הראשי הרי שלוחו של אדם כמותו.

עד " ז הוא גם בנמשל אשר מקבלי התורה והתנאים והאמוראים מורי הוראה בישראל ע"פ חוקי תורתנו תורת ד' על ידם נמסרים הוראות ממה"מ הקב"ה, וכמו שבמשל המשמעת והקבלת עול היא לא לדכא להשפיל ולהזיק את החיל, אלא אדרבה, ככל שיהי' יותר חזק בהמשמעת וקב"ע תוקדם עלייתו מדרגא לדרגא וטוב יהי' לו בכל עניניו, עד"ז אלא שכ"פ ככה כן הוא בהנוגע לקבלת עול מלכות שמים המביא לקב"ע תורה וקב"ע מצות בחיי היום יומים, והאריכות בזה אך למותר.

וכיון שזכה לידיעת אור תורת החסידות עכ"פ במקצת ויודע הדרכותי' ומנהגי', עליו להתנהג בזה גם בצבא ומוטלת עליו הזכות והאחריות להכיר את חבריו בקבוצה ובפלוגה את כל זה, ולשמש סמל ודוגמא איך נצר ממשפחה שממנה בא, ואיך זה זכה להיות איזה זמן בכותלי ישיבת תומכי תמימים מתנהג ופועל, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון, ואם ירצה באמת תצליח שליחותו זו בידו.

בודאי יש לו קביעות עתים בתורה בכל יום הן בתורת הנגלה והן בתורת החסידות, והעיקר, בהלכות הצריכות בחיי יום יומים.

בהנוגע לשאלתו הפרטית שמציעים לו שידוכים, נכון הדבר שיתענין בזה, ובפרט שכותב שהמשתדלים בזה הם חבריו מצעירי אגו"ח, והשי"ת המשגיח על כאו"א בהשגחה פרטית , ינחהו בדרך הטובה לפניו בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.
