Igrot Kodesh · Letter 360 — Geometry in Creation and Chassidic Discourse Analysis
Volume 2 · Letter 195
By the grace of Hashem, 27 Nissan 5708, To the distinguished young man, 'Chassid who fears Hashem, Rav C.[1], I greet you and bless you,
I reply to the question you posed to me. The 'Chassidic discourse* entitled 'and Hashem smelled the pleasing aroma', of 5708, states: 'The form[2]*, rounded, spherical, square, or having extremities, is not specified in the ten Utterances* of creation'. Now, our Sages emphasize that nothing was created, originally, in a square form, and a 'Chassidic discourse of 5663[3] indeed states: 'round, having extremities, or three corners[4]'.
We must first verify whether this principle is accepted by all, regardless of the situation:
A) The Bavli* and the Yerushalmi*, in tractate Shevuot*, speak of the vain oath of one who swears he saw a 'serpent the size of a pressing beam', but does not specify that this beam was square. The Yerushalmi gives an explanation in this regard. For the Bavli, on the other hand, one may consider that the rule according to which nothing was originally created in a square form does not exist. But one may question this conclusion, since, according to various commentators, it is indeed a square beam that is meant in this text.
B) Rabban Shimon Ben Gamliel* enunciates this principle in tractate Maasrot*, but another Tanna* seems to contest it. Here again, this interpretation is difficult to accept, for it would set the Bavli and the Yerushalmi in opposition.
C) The Yerushalmi concludes that living beings were not created with a square form. Certain foods, on the other hand, were.
D) Living beings were not created with a square form and smooth sides — that is, forming a cube. They may, however, be square on one side and rounded on the other, or else possess a side that is not entirely smooth.
E) The Noda BiYehuda* explains that the principle according to which a woman cannot conceive during her first relation is merely a general rule, to which there may be exceptions. The same may therefore apply to what is the subject of our discussion.
F) A cube has an edge that is always identical, but, figuratively speaking, one may call any six-faced volume a cube. Perhaps this 'Chassidic discourse alludes to this, and the question posed thereby finds its answer.
One may further formulate the following remarks:
A) It is known that a salt crystal is cubic and its faces are smooth.
B) The Midrash Mekhilta*, at the beginning of Parshat Beshalach*, says: 'They turned back and camped before Pi HaChirot*[5]. The clods of earth in that place were not curved, but like mounds.' The entire development that follows seems difficult to understand. Why not simply say that there were clods of earth in the shape of mounds?
One may therefore explain that the Midrash justifies in this way why the children of Israel were then encircled. There were no slopes, which they could have climbed to save themselves had they been pursued by the Egyptians. These were, in fact, mounds, which were not open, but solid. They were not rounded — in which case it would have been possible to cross through them by breaking only the narrowest part. In fact, these mounds were cubic. That is to say, they were touching one another, and to pass through them it was necessary to break them all the way along.
Moreover, these mounds had not been built by men, for if that were the case, they could have been destroyed more easily. They had been created as such. Now, it is known that nothing square was created during the first six days. The Midrash therefore concludes: 'It bore openings' and was thus not smooth. One may thereby understand the entire development of this passage.
It is specified that these mounds had not been built by men, because: 1. this means they were not forbidden, even if they were served as idols, for, according to tractate Avoda Zara* 45a, 'mountains cannot be their gods[6]'; 2. this justifies that Hashem asked the children of Israel to camp in that place, even though one may not give a direction by making use of the name of an idol. Admittedly, this ruling derives from our Sages, but it is known that they cannot forbid what the Torah clearly permits.
C) One must understand the reference made here to the six days of creation: 1. First possibility: there are heavenly creations that were made after these six days, such as the Tachash*[7] or the opening at the center of the earth. Conversely, Adam's action, on the very day of his creation, may have allowed an object to be square already during the six days of creation. 2. Another hypothesis: the six days of creation encompass all that then came into being, whether naturally or through Adam's intervention. However, there may have been a subsequent creature that nothing prevented from being cubic. But one may still raise a question in this regard.
D) According to 'Chassidut* and Kabbalah*, a connection is established between the first Tzimtzum*[8] and the cubic form. The Meorei Or* indicates that this form is linked to the feminine element.

You questioned me, some time ago, about the intervention of the Admor HaZaken*, as reported by the Torat Shalom*, for the rescue of Rabbi Pinchas Baal HaFlaa*[9]: 'According to the Rambam*, a dying person is considered as dead. If he subsequently recovers, he may conclude that the sentence pronounced against him has indeed been executed. The disciples of the Baal Shem Tov*, with the Maggid* of Mezeritch at their head, accepted this ruling of the Rambam, and that is precisely what occurred[10].'
I noted, on page 332, that I had not found the reference for this halachic* principle of the Rambam, which seemed rather to be the opinion of Rashi*.
You say that what the Torat Shalom reports does not concern the discussion among the Poskim* regarding the validity of the acts of a dying person, but bears upon the intrinsic worth of this man. Now, the Rambam does indeed say that one who kills a dying person is not liable[11], since generally speaking, one who is in his death throes does not recover. This would respond to the objection that has been raised.
Nevertheless, one cannot accept this interpretation: A) The account indicates, in fact, that the Admor HaZaken sought a halachic ruling of a novel character, then requested the agreement of the Maggid and the other disciples of the Baal Shem Tov to retain this ruling. Only after this was Rabbi Pinchas saved. Now, the Halacha* to which you refer is universally accepted. It therefore does not require the reference to the Rambam or the agreement of the Maggid.
B) Beyond the formulation of the account, the very facts indicate that it cannot be so. The heavenly tribunal had condemned Rabbi Pinchas to death, and the Maggid was seeking a means to save him. Now, according to Halacha, one condemned to capital punishment no longer has intrinsic worth, being considered as already dead, according to the ruling of the Torah*. He therefore finds himself in a lower situation than that of the dying person. For the latter is about to lose his life, whereas the former is potentially already dead. Therefore, what was the purpose of Rabbi Pinchas being in his death throes, when, in the end, he was not potentially dead[12]? All of this would be surprising.
If one considers that it was a punishment or a means of redeeming his transgression, the agony is no longer justified, for there are other means of obtaining this redemption. He could, for example, have become blind and then regained his sight, for the blind person is considered as dead, according to tractate Nedarim* 64b. And this is so according to the unanimous opinion[13].
Moreover, one cannot draw a distinction between the condemnation of the heavenly tribunal and that of men, by considering that one is potentially dead only in the latter case, which is irreversible, whereas the heavenly tribunal takes into account Teshuvah* and the King of the world then abrogates the sentence. For if Teshuvah sufficed to save Rabbi Pinchas, why was it necessary to impose upon him the agony? This is self-evident.
* * *
In your first letter, you give me various explanations of the Rambam, which might establish that he thinks, as Rashi, that the dying person is regarded as dead, even though the text seems to indicate otherwise, even though the Hagahot Maimoniyot* establish clearly that this is not the Rambam's view. Nevertheless, this would allow for an answer to this question and would confirm an interpretation of the Lechem Mishneh*.
I do not know why you wish to build a line of reasoning that is so difficult to defend. In any case, all developments are possible. Even so, even if what you write is correct, it remains necessary, in my humble opinion, to revisit the formulation of the Torat Shalom.
Just think! The Admor HaZaken could have relied upon Rashi, who clearly adopts this view. Yet he prefers to mention the Rambam, whose opinion is not as clear-cut, and to accept numerous difficulties in order to reach the conclusion that the Rambam is in agreement with Rashi! Can one imagine an assertion more surprising than this?
I conclude by wishing you all good and conveying my greeting to your parents, Rav Menachem Schneerson
