B"H

2 Tammuz* 5715

Brooklyn

To the great Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, who devotes himself to communal needs, of vast knowledge,

Rav* Sh. Y. (Rav Shlomo Yosef Zevin, of Yerushalayim*, author of the Talmudic Encyclopedia),

Blessings and greetings,

A) I am responding to your letter from before the festival of Shavuos*, which was delivered with some delay, and to the one that preceded it. It is painful to see that the united religious front was not realized (see letter no. 3489). This is all the more surprising given that one can observe, even with eyes of flesh, to what extent the party spirit has taken hold. Those political leaders who, in their private lives, are truly observant, are prepared — without a shadow of hesitation — to abandon the certain benefit that such a front would bring to religion for the dubious "dish of lentils" that is party interest.

The veil is so intense and the darkness of this exile* so deep — all the more since it emanates from a level of the forces of evil that has been permitted to dance in the royal palace, in "the land upon which the eyes of Hashem are always turned, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year" — that these men themselves do not measure the import of their actions. They do not even understand what they are doing, and they strive to deceive people who fear Hashem. They manage to convince themselves that the purest fear of Hashem is their sole motivation and not party interest.

Our Sages* say that one accepts the testimony of anyone who reports a fact that will establish itself on its own thereafter. How much more so for what is already revealed. Despite this, the party men brazenly claim the contrary. They manage to do so even though everyone can read what the newspapers said about these parties just a few days ago. And the very authors of those articles now claim the opposite.

B) This situation enables us to understand how intense the light of the true redemption* will be. Hashem has given the assurance that one will then say: "I thank You, Hashem, for You have chastised me." Indeed, such a veil is, in this case, created by one who possesses a divine soul (literally, "the shadow that has no shadow" — meaning the essence of the Jewish soul, which has no counterpart among the forces of evil), and the Tanya*, at the end of chapter 24, enables one to clearly understand what this means.

All of this will be perceived when our righteous Moshiach* reveals himself, liberating our brethren from exile* — both that of the Holy Land* and that of the rest of the world — from the "deep pit," from the fearful darkness that even the human intellect can perceive, provided it reasons correctly.

C) I thank you for remaining in contact with our friend, Mr. Shazar. You add that he corresponds with me, but for the present, I have received none of his letters.

D) You mention the Pelach HaRimon* (by Rabbi Hillel of Paritch*, one of the great disciples of the Mitteler Rebbe* and the Tzemach Tzedek*). We have just completed the publication of the volume on the Book of Shemos*. It contains more than four hundred pages. Obviously, we will send it to you as soon as it is bound.

E) If you have good news about the health of your son, please let me know. I thank you in advance.

F) You raise the matter of the variation introduced regarding Lag BaOmer*. Indeed, in the Chassidic* discourses, the term is used with a Beis (BaOmer*), whereas in the actual counting, one pronounces a Lamed (LaOmer*), as one does on all other days of the Omer* (see Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 7, p. 337). You develop a lengthy explanation on this subject.

Nevertheless, the reasons you give to justify this change apply in the same way to the other days of the Omer* — for example, when writing a letter — and also to Lag BaOmer*. According to the explanation of Chassidus*, the preceding days also matter, for the refinement and effort (of this period of the Omer*) proceed by stages. One cannot reach "Hod* of Hod*" (the Omer* count of the day of Lag BaOmer*) without having passed through all the preceding stages.

Between you and me, I see only one explanation for this change, and it is particularly simple. According to various opinions, one must use the Beis (BaOmer*) for the counting (of each day). The new element is that we count precisely with a Lamed (LaOmer*). It is clear that for the counting proper, one must take into account the differences that exist depending on whether one says BaOmer* or LaOmer*. By contrast, this is less important for what is not as precise — for example, the date inscribed on letters, or even the way one names this day in Chassidic* discourses.

Thus, in the first three sections of the Tanya* (which are texts composed with precision), verses illustrating the point are cited, whereas in Iggeres HaKodesh* (which is a collection of letters), this is not done — as I note in the preface to the index of the Tanya*. For an obvious reason (so as not to introduce a distinction between the degrees of precision of the texts), I did not wish to publicize this explanation widely.

G) I am enclosing the continuation of the note on the imprisonment (of the Frierdiker Rebbe*), which will no doubt interest you.

With my respects and blessing,

M. Schneerson

P.S.: I have just learned that the rescue fund will meet next Monday. I have asked that a telegram be sent to you on this subject, and through you also to Rav* Hutner, who is surely in contact with them (the members of this committee), so that an intervention be made for the support of the Encyclopedia. Indeed, they are being asked this year to distribute fewer grants than last year. A special effort is therefore necessary, which may perhaps prove effective.

Concerning the difference between the Beis and the Lamed, previously discussed, you should also consult Iggeres HaKodesh*, at the end of chapter 13.

I mentioned in my previous letter (no. 3452) the Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim*, chapter 158:

A) The Turei Zahav* himself — and not only the opinion he cites — adopts a more lenient position than the Gaon of Vilna*, whose position the Alter Rebbe* specifies in his Shulchan Aruch*, chapter 158, paragraph 7.

Indeed, he emphasizes at various points that "since he performs an action to make it a liquid... by means of this action to make it a liquid." This is not the case for the Magen Avraham*, who says: "In liquefying them, he will think only of making them a food."

Consequently, the Turei Zahav* and the Magen Avraham* have divergent opinions on all the intermediate cases that can be determined between these two extremes — for example, if one thinks of making it both a food and a liquid, in which case there is no determining act (to establish what intention one has). Everything therefore depends on the action subsequently performed. And one can find still more examples.

B) From where does the Alter Rebbe* derive that the words of the Magen Avraham* must be interpreted in this way? This matters little for our discussion. Indeed, whatever the personal view of the Turei Zahav*, the Magen Avraham* in fact discusses the opinion he cites. One must conclude that the Alter Rebbe* has a proof that this interpretation is correct, and does not merely consider that one is unable to find another interpretation.

This proof is perhaps the following: the Magen Avraham* cites, to support his reasoning, the washing of hands discussed in Tractate Shabbos* 19b: "Honey is, from the outset, a liquid, and in this case, also a liquid."

C) You note the following expression of the Alter Rebbe*: "He adopts a lenient position also in this matter." It is clear that this refers to what was said previously: "Nevertheless, he may consume it with a spoon or a knife" — which he repeats virtually word for word by saying: "One may adopt a lenient position in this matter if he does so with a spoon or with a knife."

D) The idea that the thought of a non-Jew will have no effect during the liquefaction — which I mention only incidentally — can be explained as follows: for a non-Jew, it matters not whether it subsequently becomes a food or a liquid. This is not the case in your reasoning, as though the question and doubt had not yet arisen, as though one were not yet able to establish a position and decide. Several examples can be cited in this regard.

Likewise, one may think that the efficacy of thought is conditioned by the fact that the one who has it is indeed the owner (of the honey). It is for this reason that, in various domains, the thought of a non-Jew is not taken into account, as the Tzafnas Paaneiach* explains in the supplement to volume 4, page 14. All of this will not be elaborated here.
