To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav* Yaakov Yosef (Rav Y. Y. Gurkov), the Shochet*,

Blessings and greetings,

I have duly received your letter from this Monday, in which you communicate to me the list of your classes during the summer, and the changes that have occurred in this regard. No doubt, from time to time, you will increase them. As you know, it has been taught that "nothing can withstand the will" and that "all beginnings are difficult."

You tell me that you are discouraged, observing that those who attend your class in a certain shul* do not seem to be changed by it. This is no doubt merely an impression. It is impossible that words of Torah* — in general, and of Chassidus* in particular — remain without effect. These must enable one to turn away from evil or to do good, until the observer — who can only rely on what he sees with his own eyes — also perceives the change. But this is not always rapid. All teachers and all students are not the same in this regard.

In truth, two separate domains must be distinguished. For a Jew need only fulfill the mission that is incumbent upon him. And the effect he produces upon his student is entirely independent of that. Certainly, this result provides a satisfaction that is practically a reward (of the action carried out for others). Nevertheless, the assurance has been given that an effort is never in vain, that "words emanating from the heart penetrate into the heart."

Consequently, you will continue your positive activity, spreading the wellsprings* of Chassidus* everywhere, until they reach the outside. You will observe the result of your efforts in those who attend your classes, and you will derive Chassidic* satisfaction from the members of your family.

I am enclosing the continuation of the note on the imprisonment (of the Frierdiker Rebbe*). No doubt you will make its content available to the widest audience, in the appropriate manner.

With my blessing,

M. Schneerson

It is surely unnecessary to remind you of the need to make use of the days of liberation (of the Frierdiker Rebbe*), the 12th and 13th of Tammuz*, to the fullest extent possible — but in a manner that the residents of London, who observe you, will agree that you indeed follow the "pleasant ways" (defined by the Torah*).
