B"H
Second day of Rosh Chodesh* Tammuz* 5715
Brooklyn, New York
To the members of the committee for the gathering of observant physicians of New York,
may Hashem grant you long life,
Blessings and greetings,
I learned with pleasure that you are going to meet in order to organize an association of observant physicians. At all times, the union of those who fear the Word of Hashem is a positive initiative. How much more is this the case in the present era, when confusion reigns in people's minds — as a result of the terrible events that have disillusioned many who adopted erroneous opinions and ideologies, and have led them to search earnestly for the truth.
An association of observant physicians can exert a positive influence on this debate of ideas by making clear declarations on various points regarding which many people are still in error.
It must be affirmed that a true scientist has no other aim than to seek the truth. Consequently, the conclusions he adopts cannot contradict our Torah*, the Torah* of truth. On the contrary, the more one deepens one's research, the more one becomes aware of the truth of the principles — and even the details — of our faith, the faith of Israel.
A physician, in particular, is duty-bound to reject the supremacy of matter, observing how closely physical health is linked to spiritual equilibrium. Already in earlier times, a medical adage spoke of "a sound mind in a sound body," but in our day, one has been able to verify how a slight spiritual imbalance is the cause of a profound physical disorder. The stronger the mind, the better it controls the body and is able to fill its deficiencies. Several treatments administered physically prove to be far more effective when the patient adheres to them, is motivated, and possesses the will to be healed.
This principle of the preponderance of spirit over matter, of the qualitative over the quantitative, is also underscored by the fact that it is becoming increasingly clear how the vital functions of the body cannot be measured in quantitative terms. Indeed, the glands and their secretions, the hormones, and the vitamins are quantitatively minimal.
In this regard, the verse says: "From my flesh, I behold the Divine." By seeing how the spirit directs the body, which is a small world, one takes a small step toward understanding how Hashem directs the world, which is itself compared to a great man. In the words of our Sages*: "Just as the soul fills the body, perceives it, sees it, but is not seen — so the Holy One, blessed be He, fills the world, perceives it, sees it, but is not seen."

These few ideas are only generalities. However, various elements are directly related to the medical function, some even having concrete implications. We will cite a few:
The dissemination of the great benefit of observing the laws of family purity*, of adopting the laws of kashrus* in food, and of practicing circumcision*.
Problems related to the reproductive system — the necessity of avoiding a treatment that causes sterility, and the possibility of an alternative treatment, particularly for the prostate operation (see letter no. 3400).
Medications — the possibility of ensuring that they are kosher*, a result that is not currently achieved solely due to lack of interest and attention.
Dissection and the violation of the respect due to the deceased — the study of anatomy can be conducted on forms and models.
The investigation of causes of death (by performing an autopsy), which in many cases is not at all necessary, and when it is — because it saves someone, for example by clearing him of suspicion of having poisoned the deceased — can be limited to an incision where necessary, with subsequent burial of the fragments removed.
Other examples could also be cited.
* * *
I was emphasizing the benefit to physical health of practicing mitzvos*, and it goes without saying that my intent is not to explain the reason for the mitzvos*. As is known, we practice them because they are the Command and the Will of the Creator. And the reward of a mitzvah* is the ability to practice it, for such is the purpose of man — to cleave to and become unified with the Creator through the fulfillment of His commandments.
In truth, I was alluding to those who are not yet of sound mind, Heaven forbid. And there is no other way but to bring them closer to practice, which one is obligated to do to the fullest extent possible, even if this requires emphasizing the physical benefits.
I conclude by expressing my wish that the words of the verse be fulfilled in you: "Then those who fear Hashem spoke to one another." Hashem will grant you success and you will achieve a concrete result. Then, as the end of that same verse says: "This was recorded in the book of remembrance before Him" — before Hashem, and also for the merit of all, which depends upon you.

* * *
* * *
