1st day of Rosh Chodesh* Tammuz* 5715
Brooklyn
Blessings and greetings,
I have duly received your report of 22 Sivan, and may Hashem grant that in the future, the statement of our Sages* be fulfilled in you: "The wise increase peace in the world."
You should consult the introduction of the Chavas Daas* on the Yoreh Deah*, which defines what constitutes a sage. And Chassidus* clearly specifies the effect of wisdom on the service of Hashem. The same applies to relations with other people, as explained in the Chassidic* discourses entitled Heichaltzuv* ("Enlist for yourselves men," which treat more specifically the necessity of loving one's fellow), from that of the Alter Rebbe* in the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Matos*, through that of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, published as an addendum to the Kuntres* Heichaltzuv* of 5659 (1899, by the Rebbe Rashab*, father of the Frierdiker Rebbe*).
You will therefore devote the time — your time, your skills, and your enthusiasm — to spreading the wellsprings* of Chassidus* outward, in accordance with the will of our holy master.
I send you my blessing of success in your sacred mission. You will carry out "the vengeance of Hashem against Midian," as these Chassidic* discourses explain. After that, you will enter the spiritual Eretz Yisrael*. Indeed, Eretz* derives from the word Ratzon* (will) — "she who desired to do the will of her Creator" — and Yisrael* derives from the verse: "You have struggled with men and angels, and you have prevailed."
This will be a proximate preparation for settling physically in Eretz Yisrael*, with our righteous Moshiach*, very soon and in our days, together with the entire Jewish people.
With my blessing,
For a certain reason, the dispatch of this letter was delayed, and I have just received your letter of the first day of Rosh Chodesh*, along with its contents.
I thank you for the good news of what was organized on Lag BaOmer*, even though it seems that the opportunity that presented itself was not fully seized. If that is indeed the case, you will surely put into practice the teaching found at the end of chapter 9 of Iggeres HaTeshuvah* (according to which one who must repair his failing, if he was accustomed to studying one chapter, should learn two). And henceforth, your activity will be doubled. You should consult the Midrash* Bereishis Rabbah*, at the beginning of chapter 58, and the Or HaTorah*, on the discourse entitled "And Avraham heard."
