To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav* Yitzchak Zalman (Rav I. Z. Pozner),

Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter from this Monday, which brings good news. Indeed, you tell me that your contract has been renewed by your community, by a large majority. May Hashem grant that this be at a good and fruitful time. You will succeed in being the "master of the place" according to the definition the Alter Rebbe* gives of this expression (see letter no. 3450) — that is, one who truly directs it.

You will make use of this authority to make that place a place of Torah* and mitzvos*, illuminated by the luminary of the Torah*, which is the teaching of Chassidus*, with its practices and customs.

Such a result is expected of you, and you have therefore been granted the necessary strength to achieve it, as well as the ability to employ these strengths, according to "the ways of the Torah* which are pleasant." Moreover, "all its paths are peace."

Obviously, for your own part, you must also put into practice the words of the verse: "You shall not hide yourself from your own flesh" — in the three domains of Torah* study; the sacrifices which, in our era, are replaced by "the service of Hashem of the heart" (prayer) — that is, according to the Alter Rebbe's* interpretation, "in the heart and with the heart"; and good deeds, which are, broadly, tzedakah* and kindness, based on the love of one's fellow.

It is upon these three pillars that the great world rests, as well as the small world that man constitutes.

With my blessing for success in all that has been said,

במענה על מכתבו מיום השני, מבשר טוב, אשר ברוב גדול חדשו החוזה שלו בקהלתו. הנה יה"ר שיהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת, ויצליח להיות מרא דאתרא כפירוש רבנו הזקן שיהי' כפשוטו דער אמת'ר בעל הבית פון דעם ארט, וישתמש במרות זו לעשות את המקום מקום תורה ומצוה מוארים במאור שבתורה זוהי תורת החסידות הדרותי' ונהגי'.

וכיון שדורשים את זה ממנו הרי הקדימו לזה לו הכחות על זה וגם האפשריות להביאם מכח אל הפועל, ובדרכי התורה שהם דרכי נועם ואפילון נתיבותי' הם שלום, ומבן שגם בנגון דידי' בתקפו הוא הכתוב ומבשרך לא תתעלם והוא בהנוגע לשלשת העמודים דתורה עבודה שבימינו היא העבודה שלבב, וכפירוש רבנו הזקן מיטן הארץ און אין הארץ), וגמ"ח שכללותה ענין הצדקה וחסד ויסודם אהבת ישראל, שעליהם העולם עומד היינו העולם גדול והעולם קטן זה האדם.
