To the great Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav* Ephraim Eliezer HaKohen (Rav E. E. Yalles, of Philadelphia),

Blessings and greetings,

You have surely already been contacted following your letter of Thursday of Parshas* Behaalosecha*, "when you raise up the lights." Nevertheless, out of respect, I am writing to you personally to confirm that I received your letter along with its contents.

May Hashem grant that this be a good beginning and that the promise be fulfilled in its entirety, for the full amount pledged (presumably to tzedakah*), or even that it be exceeded. Indeed, the Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure." If one keeps one's promise, and all the more so if one goes beyond it, Hashem fulfills what He has promised us and even goes beyond that commitment.

In the terminology of Chassidus*, the arousal from Above is commensurate with the arousal from below that provokes it. Then comes another arousal from Above, incomparably greater than the one that preceded it.

You have begun this action and it therefore falls to you to bring it to completion (in accordance with the principle of our Sages* that "one who begins a mitzvah* is asked to complete it"). Thus you will have the merit of raising up the lights (the addressee being a Kohen*) — "the lamp of Hashem, which is the soul of man" — including in this very domain, until "the flame rises of its own accord" (this is explained in Likkutei Torah*, Shir HaShirim*, from page 22b).

Moreover, this concerns education, and according to the perfect Torah* — its revealed part as well as its hidden teaching — in this generation of the heel of Moshiach*, when the sun is setting (as stated by our Sages* in Midrash* Shemos Rabbah*, ch. 15, par. 6), it is certain that "these lights will never be extinguished" (as our Sages* say regarding the Chanukah* lights), as the Ramban* emphasizes in his Torah* commentary on the verse "when you raise up the lights" (at the beginning of Parshas* Behaalosecha*).

With my blessing for success in all that has been said,

I received your letter of 26 Sivan and I thank you for the account it reports. Our Sages* say that "one who gives a gift (must make it known to the recipient)," all the more when he does so "because he himself derives pleasure from it." Consequently, I must tell you that I mentioned your name and those of the members of your family at the resting place of the one whose liberation we will celebrate next month (the Frierdiker Rebbe*, who was liberated on the 12th of Tammuz*).
