To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, of good character,
Rav* Moshe HaKohen (Rav M. Shayevitch),
Blessings and greetings,
I was pleased to see Chassidim* from Chicago here and to receive their news, as well as to learn what is happening with them and with their shul* "Shaarei Tefillah Bnei Reuven, of the Arizal* rite." I now refer to the discussion we had.
A) I was pleased to learn that you have acquired a plot of land on which to build the shul*, and especially that it is in a central location where Jews reside. You know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, commenting on the expression commonly used by our Sages*, "one who engages in Torah*" (oseh b'Torah — which can also mean "one who does business with Torah*"). Why not speak of "one who studies Torah*" or "one who performs the mitzvah*"?
In truth, a Jewish man or woman must indeed regard Torah* and mitzvos* as a business. Concretely, the merchant does not remain at home in his room, waiting for someone to come and propose a good deal and award him a medal and a place of honor if he accepts it. He knows that this business is in his interest and that of his family. He therefore traverses markets and streets to discover it. He relinquishes his own comfort and concerns, tires himself morally and physically, as long as his business functions well and develops steadily.
Moreover, even when the merchant cannot attend to his affairs, he thinks about them. What will he need to do tomorrow and the day after? How can he prepare now for what he will do only later?
To achieve results, one of the conditions to fulfill is the following: the business must be located in a place of heavy traffic, and the passersby must belong to the widest circles. Thus, their visit to that location will be facilitated, and one will be able to establish contact with them.
All the details just set forth apply in the same manner to Torah* and mitzvos*.
How much more is this the case for choosing the location of a shul*, which is, in its etymological sense, a house of gathering (Beis Knesses*) for Jews who come to pray to the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, and to study His Torah*. And it is said, "The honor of the King is in a multitude of people."
B) In all Jewish communities, particularly in the United States, the period of Selichos* and the month of Tishrei* are propitious for drawing Jewish hearts close to our Father in Heaven, as well as for uniting hearts among people. Everything that proceeds from holiness* must therefore be used to that end. This matters for the entire coming year.
It is clear that, even with the greatest efforts, it is not possible for the shul* to be built on the plot you purchased by this coming Tishrei*. But in my view, one should make an effort to rent, near that location, a large room or a hall in which the Jews of the neighborhood can pray during the propitious times of that month.
Likewise, you should establish a Talmud Torah* for the children in the vicinity. Thus, the Jews of the neighborhood will frequent the shul* that will be built, and they will become members at a good and fruitful time. Their children will attend your schools. And all of this depends on the beginning of the year, from the standpoint of studies and prayer.
In general, one remains throughout the year in the shul* where one prayed in Tishrei*, and one also stays in the school where one was enrolled at the start of the year.
C) You tell me that another shul* or house of study proposes to participate in the construction of yours, on condition that you change your name (presumably to adopt theirs). You ask me what I think.
Your shul* has been known in Chicago and its surrounding area for several decades already. It therefore seems to me out of the question to change its name, which must, on the contrary, remain intact, since it has already brought it glory and renown.
To accommodate their request, however, you may add their name, but "Shaarei Tefillah Bnei Reuven" must remain the primary name. Moreover, it would be good to separate the two designations by the word "synagogue" or "house of study." Thus, you could say: "Synagogue Shaarei Tefillah Bnei Reuven, of the Arizal* rite, and Synagogue (or House of Study) so-and-so."
May Hashem grant that in this new neighborhood, you have the merit and the success of building a Chassidic* shul* and house of study, from which will emanate "the candle that is a mitzvah* and the Torah* that is a light," as well as the luminary of the Torah* — which is the teaching of Chassidus*, its practices and its ways — throughout your entire surroundings.
With my blessing, and with greetings to those who pray in this shul*, its members, and first and foremost its leaders,
