23 Sivan 5715

Brooklyn

Blessings and greetings,

A) I am responding to your letter of 15 Sivan and the one that preceded it. I was speaking about the influence you exert to spread the wellsprings* of Chassidus* outward. I was thus alluding to your visit to the Yeshivah*. I hoped that by making this remark, I would have awakened in you the desire to continue with even greater ardor such important accomplishments.

For these are indispensable — and not only in that Yeshivah*. They are connected to the fulfillment of the promise made by Moshiach* to the Baal Shem Tov*: "When will you come?" — "When your wellsprings* spread outward" — as quickly as possible. This objective is assigned to each one of us, and we undoubtedly possess the necessary strength to meet the expectations.

B) In my letter, I also mentioned the third domain of the service of Hashem — that of good deeds. This completed the subject discussed, but was also directly related to the content of my correspondence.

Indeed, devoting oneself to spreading the wellsprings*, and more generally exerting a positive influence on one's fellow, is itself a good deed.

C) You tell me that you continue giving classes at the Yeshivah*, and I am pleased. Thank Hashem, you note that the spirit of study has been strengthened there compared to last year.

No doubt you are doing your part to strengthen the fear of Hashem. Indeed, you particularly need the fulfillment of the statement of our Sages*, in Tractate Berachos* 6b, that "the words of one who is animated by the fear of Hashem are heeded." And this applies equally to the teaching of Torah*, especially when it is addressed to the wider public.

D) It seems to you that your memory has weakened in recent times. As you know, for this one must study the text that "the heart desires." If you feel that you are weakening and losing the ability to deepen your study, learn another text or another subject.

One of the propitious means in this regard is to learn Mishnah* by heart (see letter no. 3577), but, as I said, without tiring oneself, as it is said: "He will increase what he can gather with his hand" — that is, what is within reach, without strain. It would also be good to know by heart the Chassidic* discourse entitled "You shall honor the elder," which is in the Likkutei Torah*, at the end of Parshas* Kedoshim*.

E) You inform me of your birthday (see letter no. 3564), and you have surely observed the customs of this day. You were called to the Torah* on the day itself, or — if it was not a day of Torah* reading — on the preceding Shabbos*. You gave tzedakah* before prayer if it was a weekday, and on the eve of the date if it was a Shabbos* or festival. You had an additional study session in the revealed part of the Torah* and in Chassidus*. You observed, that day, the three studies that concern everyone — in Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*.

May Hashem therefore grant you a year of success in the study of Torah* and the practice of mitzvos*, in the best manner.

With my blessing,
