Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 12 Sivan, in which you tell me that a young woman was suggested to you and you decided to become engaged. But subsequently, you discovered that you were mistaken about her age. You now know that she is older than you, and you ask me what should be done.

In such a case, the honor of a Jewish woman or a Jewish man is at stake. With regard to engagements in particular, everything depends on the custom of the country and the locality. Indeed, "custom is an integral part of the Torah*." Consequently, you should consult the Rabbanim* who rule on Halachah* in your country. Explain the matter to them and present the various possibilities. They will indicate to you what should be done.

May Hashem guide you, grant you success, and enable you to settle in a fitting manner, materially and spiritually.

You surely have fixed times for the study of our holy Torah*, the Torah* of life. Additionally, you fulfill the mitzvos* in the best manner — in general, and the mitzvah* of tzedakah* in particular. It would also be good to have your tefillin* checked, especially the parchments.

May Hashem grant you success in all of this.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ב דיון, בו כותב שנסדר בעינן שידוך עם בחורה אחת וגמרו השידוכין, אבל לאחרי זה נתברר אצלו שהטעוהו בנוגע לשנותי', ולפי ידיעתו עתה, גדולה היא ממנו בשנים, ושואל איך להתנהג בזה.

הנה בעינים כמו אלו, התלוים בכבוד בן או בת ישראל, וביחוד בניני שידוכין תלוי זה במנהג המדינה והמקום, ומנהג ישראל תורה היהא, ולכן צריך לפרש שיחתו לפני רבני המדינה בעלי ההוראה ויפרט הדברים בכל הטעמים שבז, והם יורוהו, והשי"ת ינחהו ויצליחו בהסתדרות טובה לפניו בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.

בודאי יש לו שיעורים קבועים בלימוד ורתנו הקדושה תורת חיים, ומהדר במצות בכלל ובמצות הצדקה בפרט, ומהנכון הי' לבדוק את התפילין שלו ובעיקר הפרשיות, והשי"ת יצליחו בכל הנ"ל.
