To the great Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Blessings and greetings,

I have just received your letter of 18 Sivan. I appreciated what was said in it and what was enclosed, although you had informed me of it some time ago. Indeed, our Sages* say in the Mechilta*, on Parshas* Yisro* 19:9, that "what one sees is in no way comparable to what one hears."

At all times, a positive action carried out by Jews — especially when they are numerous — arouses joy. How much more is this the case at the present time, particularly when it involves women. Indeed, the "virtuous women" were the cause of the first redemption*, at the time of the exodus from Egypt, and it is said, "As in the days of your going out of Egypt, I will show you wonders" — regarding the future redemption*, very soon and in our days, which will be a complete and true redemption*.

As you suggest, I enclose a letter for them (see the preceding letter). It is said that "the wine belongs to its owner, but one thanks the one who serves it" (in this case, Rav* Shochat*, although the gift comes from those women). You should consult the Sefer HaMitzvos* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, on the mitzvah* of circumcision, end of chapter 3, according to which this applies only to a person in the full sense of the term — that is, one who possesses free will (and could therefore have directed this gift elsewhere).

You write in their name, and may Hashem therefore make you His emissary to arouse, in all cases, tzedakah* and good — material tzedakah* as well as spiritual.

ז"ע נתקבל מכתבו ח"י סיון, ונהניתי מהכתבו בו והמצורף לו, ואף שכתב לי אודות זה מכבר, הרי ידוע מרז"ל (מכילתא פ' יתרו יט, ט) שאינו דומה שמיעה לראי', ואם בכל הזמנים פעולה טובה של בני ישראל ובפרט של רבים היתה גורמת שמחה, עאכו"כ בזמננו זה, ובפרט כשבאה מנשי ישראל, אשר נשים צדקניות הביאו גאולה הראשונה מארץ מצרים, והרי כימי צאתך מארץ מצרים אראנו כו', בגאולה העתידה בב"א בגאולה השלימה ואמיתית. ובהצעתו, הנה מוסגר בזה מכתבי אליהן וחמרא למרא וטיבותא לשקי' (ועיין בספר המצות לכ"ק הצמח צדק מצות מילה ספ"ג שזה שייך דוקא באדם, אתם קרוים אדם בעלי בחירה אמיתיים). וכיון שכותב בשמן, הנה יצליח להיות שליח גם מלמעלה לעורר תמיד צדקה וחסד - צדקה בגשמיות וגם צדקה ברוחניות.
