19 Sivan* 5715

To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Saadya* (Rav S. Liberov, of Sefrou*, Morocco; see letter no. 3508),

Greetings and blessings,

A) I am responding to your letter of 13 Sivan*. May Hashem grant that your students increase in number and therefore also in quality. This large number will simplify the situation, according to the principle that "when a thousand undertake the study of the Written Law, a hundred reach that of the Mishnah*." In fact, I am somewhat surprised that this large number has not already been reached, since you tell me that several students were sent from Casablanca* to strengthen the activity. I await your good news.

B) You write to me about the mikveh* (see letter no. 3639). Although your letter is not clear, you seem to indicate that the water draining from the pool is retained by an iron plug that seals the opening made in the pool's floor. I read all of this with alarm, but perhaps there is only a misinterpretation of your words.

The permission to act in this manner has been challenged, since this plug is intended to have a fixed position. You surely possess a copy of the letter of the Rebbe Rashab* (see letter no. 3189), who did not even permit sealing this opening with a rubber plug, because according to one opinion, it can contract impurity. He therefore advised performing this closure with a wooden implement, which is smoother.

Nevertheless, it is difficult to obtain a perfect seal between wood and stone. The solution is therefore as follows: one corner of the floor can be made of wood, and it is there that an opening with a wooden plug will be made. It is indeed easier to obtain a seal between two pieces of wood. Nevertheless, the best solution — and this is what I request whenever I have the possibility — is to make no opening whatsoever in the floor and to evacuate the water by means of a pump, if possible one that is called a siphon. Those who are familiar with this work know what this entails.

I enclose the response for this young man. I rely on your judgment to provide him with all the additional details that might prove necessary. As your letter seems to indicate, it would be good for him, after the appropriate preparation, to continue his studies in Brunoy* — the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* Lubavitch in the Paris region.

With my blessing to give good news concerning all that has been said,

M. Schneerson,
