19 Sivan* 5715

I am responding to your letter from the eve of the time of the giving of our Torah* and to the one that preceded it, which expressed your good wishes on the occasion of the festival. Now, whoever blesses is himself blessed with the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, as it is said: "I will bless those who bless you," as tractate Sotah* 31b explains. For this verse does not allude solely to a Kohen*. And the same statement is found in the Midrash HaGadol* and also in the Yerushalmi* Berachos*, chapter 8, cited by tractate Chullin* 49a, where it is said that "the interest exceeds the capital" — that is, of this blessing.

You ask me about the supplements to the Haggadah* of Pesach* published by Kehot* — the form in which the Rebbe's commentaries were initially published, before they were later set in parallel to the body of the text:

A) Concerning the name of Shabbos HaGadol* — which precedes the festival of Pesach* — you will consult the Torah Sheleimah*, vol. 11, and its supplements, which indicate several references treating this subject.

B) The Rebbe Rashab* used to say: "This year we are here; next year we will be in Eretz Yisrael*," raising his tone for the words "next year," thus signifying that it refers to the past. You ask me how to understand this statement.

I have received no explanation on this subject. Nevertheless, it seems to me that these words refer, quite simply, to a period that has already begun, on this Pesach*. And one then says, "Next year we will be free," emphasizing this time "next year," because this time one is alluding to the future.

To properly understand all of this, especially in its spiritual dimension, one must specify that the fulfillment of the promise "next year in Eretz Yisrael*" depends solely on man himself, who possesses free will, particularly in all moral matters. Eretz Yisrael* is the place that Hashem protects constantly, "from the beginning of the year to the end of the year." For this, one must not deviate from the Will of Hashem but, on the contrary, "walk in My statutes."

Consequently, when one says and decides "next year in Eretz Yisrael*," one can do so immediately, even at once. Being free, however — delivered from servitude — requires, according to the revealed dimension of Torah*, an act of emancipation or any similar procedure. In the spiritual domain, this means that "only the Holy One, blessed be He, can slaughter the evil inclination" so that man is truly free. Our Sages* say indeed: "Do not read Charus (engraved on the tablets) but Cheirus (freedom)."

Concerning what has just been said regarding "next year," you will consult the Zohar*, vol. 1, p. 265a, and the Rambam*, laws of Teshuvah*, end of chapter 8.

C) You propose to explain the difference in the Rambam's* formulation, who writes sometimes Merorim (bitter herbs, in the plural), sometimes Maror* (in the singular), by applying the first expression to the era of the Beis HaMikdash* and the second to the period after its destruction.

Now, it is precisely to set aside this interpretation — which I had also considered — that I cited another reference of the Rambam*, the laws of Chametz* and Matzah*, chapter 1, paragraph 4, which says Maror* in the singular, whereas in his Haggadah* he writes Merorim — which contradicts this interpretation.

D) Concerning the reading you make of the Tosefta*, you will consult the Tzafnas Pane'ach*, which is also cited in the supplement.

E) It is stated in the supplement — this explanation is given in the Rebbe's Haggadah* in connection with the cup of the prophet Eliyahu* (see Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 17, from p. 125) — that the study of the eighth day was instituted after the giving of the Torah*. This is related to the following question: Was the commandment of circumcision merely reiterated on Mount Sinai* — having already been stated previously — or do we practice it because it was commanded at the Sinaitic revelation?

In my opinion, this assertion is not exact. That is why I cite the Tosafos* and not tractate Shabbos*, for the commandments that had already been given previously may have been reiterated at the giving of the Torah* — and in the case of circumcision, this refers to what was said in Parshas Lech Lecha*. This is not the case for the eighth day, whose principle was stated after the giving of the Torah*.

F) You cite the Ifas Toar*, according to which they were circumcised during the daytime of the eve of Pesach* and not at night. The Riva*, on Parshas Bo*, makes an even stronger statement, since according to him, they performed the circumcision from the 10th of Nissan*.

Nevertheless, this interpretation cannot be found in Midrash* Shemos Rabbah*, at the reference I cited. This text says indeed that they circumcised themselves after having smelled the aroma of the Pesach* sacrifice that Moshe* was roasting. One must therefore conclude that there are divergent Midrashic* explanations here, or that each group — for the Pesach* sacrifice was offered by groups — acted differently.

You ask how they registered for the Pesach* sacrifice — in order to form a group — and consumed it, and you compare all of this to a conversion. I do not accept this comparison. Indeed, all were obligated in Egypt to offer the Pesach* sacrifice, and they consumed that of Moshe* because he had included them all in his. In such a case, it is permitted to confer a benefit on someone by acting in this way. This is especially the case for the Pesach* offered in Egypt, which had certain particularities. This situation was connected to the deliverance and the protection from the plague of the firstborn. Indeed, it is said that "Hashem leaped over the door," and this concerned everyone.

It is stated in the supplement — and this was recalled beforehand — that they performed the circumcision at night, because Parshas Tazria* had not yet been stated, which requires it to be performed during the day. Now, I have just found this explanation in the commentary of the Rashash* on the verse Shir HaShirim* 1:12.
