To the great Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Shneur Zalman* (Rav S. Z. Garelik, Rav of Kfar Chabad*; see letters no. 3171, 3651, and 3779),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you inform me of your birthday. You surely know the ancient custom (see letters no. 3272, 3579, and 3776), which was disseminated by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, of reciting the Psalm that corresponds to the number of one's years, as the collection of letters of the previous Rebbe* explains regarding the importance of reciting Tehillim*.

May Hashem grant that for many more years, you devote yourself to Torah* and mitzvos*, to fervent prayer. You will have the merit and success of disseminating the wellsprings of Chassidus* outward, in your close surroundings and in those that, for the time being, are not yet close. You will do so in good health and with breadth of spirit.

As you know, the vessel containing the blessing of Hashem is peace — not only that which is achieved in the heavenly spheres, but also that which is obtained here below, in the simplest sense, particularly in the place of which you are the master — that is, Kfar Chabad*.

The means of obtaining it is defined by the Torah*, whose "ways are pleasantness." One must, however, demonstrate the necessary firmness. Thus, it is said regarding the giving of the Torah* that one must have strength and weakness — strength of the divine soul and weakness of the animal soul. The verse (Tehillim* 76) and its Targum* also express this: "From the heavens, You pronounced judgment. The earth was seized with fear and remained silent." This judgment was upon the animal soul, as the Likkutei Torah* explains in the Chassidic* discourse entitled "It is good to place one's trust in Hashem." Thus, the divine soul — "Eretz Yisrael*" — became silent.

With my blessing for long days and good years in every sense (see letter no. 2268), and for good news concerning all of this.

P.S.: Concerning the study of the laws applicable in Eretz Yisrael*, "the judge takes into account only what his eyes see," and you should therefore use a book that is commonly found in your surroundings.
