Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

A) I am responding to your letter of 13 Sivan*, in which you tell me that you study at the Yeshivah* and follow the classes without the help of a teacher. You ask me how, by what path and according to what method you should study our holy Torah* — by accumulating knowledge or by favoring in-depth study of the text, with a friend or alone.

Our Sages* affirm that both methods — the accumulation of knowledge and in-depth study — are necessary. The proportion between the two must be determined according to the aptitudes and mindset of the one who studies. No general principle can be stated in this matter.

On the other hand, the study and knowledge of the laws that one applies daily are indispensable, particularly in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. Indeed, certain laws are specific to it, and few are those who know them well. Now, "the purpose of man is to fear Hashem and to observe His commandments."

Likewise, in our era, it is important — particularly for those who belong to Sephardic* communities and have therefore inherited from their ancestors the custom of studying the inner dimension of Torah* — to have a fixed study of the "soul" of Torah*, that is, its esoteric teaching, which in our era is revealed and explained through Chassidus*.

It would be good for you to meet the great Rav* and Chassid*, Rav Nachum Shmaryahu Sosonkin*, who lives in the quarter of refugee Rabbanim*, in Romema*, Yerushalayim*. He will advise you on a method of study. Through him, you will be able to meet young men and students who organize their study in the same manner.

B) As you know, the Mishnah* enumerates among the forty-eight means of acquiring Torah* the act of attaching oneself to friends. Accordingly, it would be good to arrange to study with others. Certainly, one must not neglect study when one has no friend, which Hashem forbid. And our Sages* relate in Pirkei Avos*, chapter 3, Mishnah* 6, what is said of a person who studies Torah* alone: "I will come to you and I will bless you."

You will also consult Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and posek* of the hidden dimension of Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and posek* of the revealed dimension of Torah*, at chapter 23.

With my blessing to study Torah* with the fear of Hashem and to give good news concerning all of this,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

The secretary,
