Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from the day after Shavuos*, in which you write that you experience difficulty studying for a long period with sustained concentration, except when you do so with others. And you lack motivation.
You know that attaching oneself to friends is one of the forty-eight means of acquiring the Torah*. You tell me that you are lazy and unmotivated by nature. Nevertheless, you have the ability to change your nature. The means of achieving this is expressed by the verse stating that "I will drive him out little by little" — that is, the evil — and not all at once, passing from one extreme to the other.
Here is how to proceed. From one day to the next, you will add a few moments of study, and this study will focus on "what one desires in one's heart," in the expression of our Sages*. And you will not devote a long period to the same subject. As soon as you tire, you will change the topic, according to the desire of your heart, as stated.
A well-known teaching of our Sages* says: "If the Holy One, blessed be He, did not come to one's aid" — one would not be able to vanquish one's evil inclination. They also say that "Hashem only asks according to the means one possesses." Thus, each person possesses the necessary strength to overcome his evil inclination.
The help of Hashem is systematically necessary, and to obtain it, you will regularly set aside a few coins for tzedakah* before the morning prayer. After the prayer, you will read Tehillim* each day according to their monthly division. And you will establish a regular study of the "soul" of Torah*, which is its inner teaching, revealed in our days through Chassidus*.
I am convinced that if you put all of this into practice, your situation will improve little by little, step by step.
You also inform me of the condition of your wife.
It would be good, in this regard, to have the mezuzos* of your home checked, if this has not been done during the last twelve months. You should also have your Tefillin* checked. Your wife has surely adopted the practice of virtuous women, consisting of giving a few coins to tzedakah* before lighting the candles on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals.
Hashem will grant that her pregnancy proceed well. She will give birth easily to a healthy child, in its time and in the proper manner.
With my blessing,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
The secretary,
