Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you inform me that your state of health is unsatisfactory. In your opinion and according to common sense, you are therefore not fit to carry out your current work, which involves travel, to magnify and adorn the Torah*. You therefore request a reduction in these travels.

I have already been accustomed to receiving various and diverse requests. Nevertheless, I did not expect you to formulate the conclusion of yours in the manner you did. Consider this: you believe that you are not in good health and you deduce that it is difficult for you to work. Consequently, you ask not that your health improve, but that your workload be lightened — which goes against the logic of the divine soul, but also against that of the intellectual soul.

You know the meaning of the verse "He satisfies every being according to its will." It means that Hashem grants each person in accordance with his own will and personal desire. In His great kindness, without compensation, He fulfills not only the will but also the desire. Nevertheless, when does He do so? When no harm results from it!

Certainly, according to human jurisdiction, one who causes harm to oneself is not subject to any penalty. It is not so, however, according to heavenly law. Consequently, I will request, for my part, that your state of health improve, so that you will be able, even according to your own perception, to continue carrying out your sacred mission.

It is fitting to conclude on a positive note. You tell me that your son has been married for a year. May Hashem therefore grant that his home be a true Chassidic* household, radiating the vitality and warmth of Chassidus* in its surroundings, which will increase the blessings of Hashem to satisfy all their needs — children, health, and material prosperity — in abundance.

With my blessing of good health and for good news concerning all that has been said,

במענה על מכתבו מודיע אודות מצב בריאותו אשר אינו כדבעי, ולפ"ד דעת בני אדם, הנה אינו מתאים לעבודתו בנסיעות להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה, ולכן מבקש שיקילו עליו בהנוגע לנסיעות.

והנה כבר הורגלתי בבקשות שונות ומשונות, אבל לא שיערתי שיכתוב סיום בקשה בנוסח הנ"ל. והגע עצמך, לפ"ד בריאותו אינו כדבעי, ולכן קשה עבודתו עליו לפי סברתו, לכן מבקש לא הטבת מצב בהבריאות אלא להקל עליו מעבודתו, היפך השכל דנפה"א, היפך השכל דנפש השכלית וכו'. והנה ידוע בפירוש הכתוב משביע לכל חי רצון, משביע לכל חי לפי רצונו ותאותו, היינו שהשי"ת בחסדו חסד חנם ממלא לא רק רצון אלא גם תאוה, אבל במה דברים אמורים שאין בזה היזק, ואף שבדיני אדם הרי בנוגע לעצמו פטור, אבל כיון שבדיני שמים אינו כן, הנה בקשתי מצדי היא שיוטב מצב הבריאות שלו עד שאפילו לפי דעתו וסברתו יוכל להמשיך בהצלחה עבודתו בקדש.

ומסיימים בטוב, במ"ש אשר נמלאה שנה לחתונת בנו שליט"א, הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת שביתם יהי' בית חסידותי אמיתי משם יפוצו חיות וחום חסידותי בהסיבה, וזה יוסיף בברכות השי"ת בהמצטרך להם בבני חיי ומזונא רוויחא.
