Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from before the festival of the giving of our Torah*, in which you tell me that you feel a lack concerning Torah* or the fear of Hashem. On the other hand, you say nothing about your study of the revealed dimension of Torah* and Chassidus*, which, without a doubt, is not satisfactory. It is therefore not surprising that you feel all of this.
You ask for advice. Before the prayer each weekday morning, you will give a few coins to tzedakah* and you will study a concept of Chassidus*. These are two means of obtaining that your prayer be answered. It is in the twelve intermediate blessings of the prayer that a person requests the satisfaction of his needs, and the first of these is "He grants discernment." Likewise, you will observe the ritual immersion according to the enactment of Ezra*, and you will study Torah* with diligence and constancy. Indeed, commenting on the verse "If you walk in My statutes," based on the Sifra*, Rashi* says: "By exerting your efforts in Torah*." And you know the statement of our Sages*: "One who says he did not make effort yet succeeded — do not believe him."
You surely know of the three daily studies that apply to everyone. They were instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, and they cover, as is known, the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. You will observe them, at least from now on.
I have good hope that if you observe all of this, your situation will improve little by little. You will strengthen your awareness of the lack you feel and that must be filled, but despite this, you will fill your heart with joy during the study of Torah* or the performance of a mitzvah*, in the best possible manner. The Tanya* explains at length that these two points are in no way contradictory.
With my blessing to study Torah* with the fear of Hashem,
