Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from the time of the giving of our Torah*. Its content is related to the following teaching of our Sages*, cited by the Rambam* at the end of the laws of Chanukah*: "Great is peace, for the entire Torah* was given to bring peace to the world, as it is said: 'Its paths are paths of pleasantness and all its ways are peace.'"
I have spoken to you orally on various occasions. I have also sent you letters to tell you that peace must reign among the Chassidim*. Furthermore, you know the saying of the Tzemach Tzedek* (see letter no. 2844) regarding the first four letters of the alphabet — Alef*, Beis*, Gimmel*, Dalet* — which are the initials of Achdus (unity), Berachah (blessing), and Gaavah (pride), Dalus (poverty). This is so materially, and a fortiori spiritually.
Obviously, when there is no justification for the opposite of peace, there is no need to encourage it or to demonstrate its importance in various ways. But even if logic seems to indicate that one must go against peace — even if it is true logic, that of the divine soul — one must, in spite of everything, strive to preserve it. That is why many warnings and wondrous assurances are stated regarding peace. You will consult, on this subject, the Likkutei Torah* on three Parshiyos, at the end of Parshas Noach*.
In addition to all this, it is said that "everyone is close to his own person" — that is, one is not objective regarding what concerns oneself personally. One is personally involved, and the corruption of self-love can only render one blind. The Talmud* cites the teaching of the great Sages* of the Gemara* in this matter. One therefore cannot denigrate someone or show him disrespect, which Hashem forbid, even if one thinks one can do so given the situation and the various elements that one cannot assess objectively, since one is personally implicated.
Moreover, even if it turns out that one is completely right, it is impossible for an institution to be directed by several people with divergent opinions. As you know, it is said that "a generation has one leader and not two."
Certainly, it is said that "salvation is obtained through many counselors." Nevertheless, one must defer to the decision of those who lead, even though they are only human and susceptible to error. If this is not the case, disorder will be inevitable. A fortiori when it concerns an institution belonging to the domain of holiness, whose every movement toward weakening and every symptom of discord the evil inclination observes in order to amplify it.
I have already written to you once (see letter no. 2607) that when my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, was the executive director of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* Lubavitch in the town of Lubavitch*, his father himself, the Rebbe* (the Rebbe Rashab*), did not intervene in anything concerning this institution and acted only through him. Once, for whatever reason, there was a difference of opinion between them, and the Rebbe Rashab* asked that the decision of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, be applied.
This enables one to establish a principle that applies, a fortiori, to what you write to me in your letter about the direction of this institution.
