Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 27 Iyar*, in which you inform me of the difficulties you experience in your service of Hashem. You feel, from time to time, an inspiration, but often nothing concrete results from it. You therefore ask me what practices you should adopt in this regard, knowing, moreover, that you are limited by your state of health — and therefore cannot endure fasts and mortifications.

I have already responded several times, to various people who have asked me about this point, that the service of the Creator should not be miraculous, that it does not call for exceptional abilities, except in extraordinary situations. Such a path is not for everyone. There is, however, another path that can be followed by each person — which is indeed the paved road, as our Sages* highlight in a similar case in tractate Bava Basra* 100b. One must therefore not allow oneself to be diverted and to seek winding paths whose destination is unknown.

In general, here is what one must know in this matter. Chapter 27 of the Tanya* states that "one must not become discouraged." Furthermore, in our times, people have become weakened, so that fasts and mortifications can no longer be the practice of all (see letter no. 3399) and occur only in entirely exceptional cases. How much more so when it involves a student of the Yeshivah*, who must above all devote himself to study. And we know what our Sages* say, in such a case, about one who fasts nonetheless — that he bears the grave responsibility of negligence in study resulting from his physical weakening.

You will consult, from time to time, with your mashpia*, and you will engrave in your mind the words of the verse: "I will drive him out little by little" — that is, the evil, and in the verse, the enemy. This was said regarding the physical conquest of Eretz Yisrael* and applies equally to the conquest of the spiritual Eretz Yisrael*.

May Hashem grant you success,

With my blessing that you receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner,
