Greetings and blessings,
I have read the account that appeared in your letter, as well as your book, and after asking you to kindly excuse me, I will make the following remark.
Every reproduction — whether a translation or, a fortiori, a copy of what was said by the author of the statements — necessarily reflects the sentiment and perception of the one who reproduces it. In general, it is not a simple transcription, but rather an interpretation and commentary.
Such a reproduction therefore cannot present the various aspects of a story or saying of the Torah*, our Sages* affirming that each of its concepts has "forty-nine interpretations" or even "seventy interpretations." Sometimes it is indeed necessary to comment on an idea or, at the very least, to explain it. But this is not contradictory, for one can present it as it is in itself, as it was received, and then interpret it afterward. In such a case, one indeed combines both aspects.
How much more does all of this apply to the teachings of our holy masters, to the stories that concern them. For apart from their manuscripts, their words, in their original form, have been preserved only by a select few.
Some are incapable of grasping an idea and reproducing it as it stands, without modifying it through the prism of their own mind. And they use the terminology of Chassidus* to convey their own perception rather than the concept itself. Knowing you, I think, nevertheless, that you are capable, if you so desire, of presenting this teaching as it is. The public merit depends on you, and if these few lines contribute to obtaining such a result, I would be rewarded.
With my respects and my blessing, in the formulation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, that you receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner,
