Greetings and blessings,

I am pleased that you are maintaining contact with this person. Our Sages* establish as a principle that an effort is never in vain. How much more so when those efforts are directed toward someone who is already deeply affected, even if he does not always understand the reason, or if this understanding does not manifest in the revealed part of his heart, does not make its impact felt on his thoughts, speech, and actions.

I was very pleased to learn that you will have the opportunity to exchange with the students of this man. You do not specify their level of knowledge or their nature. It is therefore difficult for me to pronounce on what the content of your discussion should be, especially since they will surely pose questions to you and not content themselves with merely interrogating you.

In any case, you surely know the synopsis of a lengthy letter from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, which he addressed to a professor from Germany (see the letters of the previous Rebbe*, vol. 3, letters no. 837 and 839). It is printed in HaTamim*. The necessity of concrete practice of mitzvos* is explained there. Thus, if someone loses the use of his senses, it is possible to make contact with him only by touching his body. This text also shows that knowledge of Torah* depends on the aptitudes of the one who studies it. It is in this that it differs from other disciplines of knowledge.

It is surely unnecessary to tell you that you must forge a bond — literally, "a knot" — with them, that is, give yourself the possibility of meeting them again subsequently. Hashem will guide your words and you will succeed in awakening the deep dimension that every Jew possesses without a doubt, particularly when he seeks the truth.
