Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Iyar*, in which you tell me that you have begun to consult the holy Tanya* and were amazed by it. You feel a profound desire to know and study the Chassidus* of Lubavitch.

You know what the Mishnah* says about the manner of acquiring Torah* — that is, each part of it. One must, for this, attach oneself to friends. Accordingly, it would be good to attach yourself to the Chassidim* in your surroundings, to the Chabad* community. You will thus be able to find study partners. Indeed, "nothing can stand in the way of the will," especially since, according to your words, yours is profound.

Nevertheless, the following teachings of our Sages* apply to Chassidus*, as to every other part of our holy Torah*: "One who says he did not make effort yet succeeded — do not believe him"; "the essential thing is not the study but the action." One must therefore adopt its customs and practices. But to achieve this, one must first study, in order to be able to act.

You also ask me why one must study specifically the teachings of Chabad*.

This merits a lengthy explanation (see letter no. 3463), which it is difficult for me to develop in writing, especially without knowing your level of knowledge in this matter. Nevertheless, the fundamental idea is, in this case, the same as the answer that can be given to the following question: Why study the Gemara* and not be content with the Mishnah* or even the Written Law?

The explanation is quite evident. The study of the Gemara* develops the Mishnah* and the Written Law, clarifies them, reveals their hidden aspects. Now, the same is true of the teachings of Chabad*, which explain, clarify, and reveal the hidden facets of the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov* and his disciples, or more generally, the inner dimension of Torah*.

Previously, the study of the hidden dimension of Torah* was, for various reasons, reserved for an elite. In our days, however, "it is a mitzvah* to reveal this dimension of Torah*" — in the words of the writings of the Arizal* — and even a necessity, as Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe* shows in chapter 26, based on the teaching of the Arizal*.

You will also consult the lengthy introduction of his disciple, Rabbi Chaim Vital*, in the Shaar HaHakdamos*. You will find, additionally, a more extensive treatment in the Kuntres Eitz HaChaim* of the Rebbe* (the Rebbe Rashab*), father of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. This latter text is addressed more specifically to those who frequent the beis midrash* — that is, to Torah* scholars.

May Hashem grant that your will prevail over the veils and obstacles, that it be effective and enable you to attach yourself to the Tree of Life — that is, Chassidus* — as Iggeres HaKodesh* explains at the same reference, based on the statement of Moshe Rabbeinu*, the faithful shepherd.

With my blessing to receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner,
