Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, which was undated. I have already written to several Chassidim* and I have told you personally, on various occasions, that in this world, in general, the material and the spiritual go hand in hand. This is particularly true concerning a Jewish man and woman. If they desire material success and request a blessing to obtain it, they must widen the spiritual channel and vessels that enable the drawing down of heavenly influence. I am referring, of course, to Torah* and mitzvos*.

Yet my words of encouragement remain only words, and in your letter, you do not make a single allusion to the purpose of man's creation, whereas the Mishnah* states at the end of tractate Kiddushin*: "I was created to serve my Creator."

It is surely evident to you as well that a neshamah* does not descend "from a lofty peak to a deep pit" solely in order to engage in commerce or sales. In the simplest sense, I mean that you must study each day the revealed dimension of Torah* and Chassidus*. This is in addition to the three well-known daily studies — the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. And you will do all of this with a smile, for one accomplishes nothing by remaining silent.

במענה על מכתבו - בלי הוראת זמן הכתיבה - וכבר כתבתי לכמה מאנ"ש, ואמרתי לו ביחוד כמה פעמים אשר הגשמיות והרוחניות יחד יהלכו בעולם בכל, ובהנוגע לאיש ואשה הישראלים בפרט, וכשמבקשים הצלחה בגשמיות וברכה בזה מוכרח להגדיל הצנור והכלים הרוחנים להמשכת הענינם מלמעלה, והם הם עניני תורה ומצות כמובן, ולמרות כל דברי ההתעוררות הרי הם נשאים בדברו ע"פ וגם במכתבו משתמט מלהזכיר אף מלה אחת בהנוגע לתכלית בריאתה אדם שהוא כהוראת השמנה סוף קדושין אני נבראתי לשמש את קוני.

ובטח גם בעיניו פשוט שלא בשביל עניני מסכר או סרסרות והדומה, ירדה הנשמה מאיגרא רמה לבירא עמיקתא, וכוונתי כפשוטה ללמד בכל יום ויום ממש שיעור בנגלה ושיעור בחסידות, נוסף על שלשת השיעורים בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, און מיט א שמייכעל און שווייגען טוט מען גארניט אויף..
