To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Peretz* (Rav P. Motshkin; see letter no. 3183),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 24 Iyar*, in which you discuss the study sessions you have established in the revealed dimension of Torah* and in Chassidus*. You say that after the festival of Shavuos*, many Chassidim* leave for the countryside. No doubt one will address them in advance, in order to explain that they will need to study Torah* there as well, and even to do so more intensively.
It is said that "Hashem made them one opposite the other" — the domain of holiness opposite that of evil. When the body strengthens its health in the physical sense — by eating, drinking, taking walks, doing what does not always appear to obviously contribute to the service of Hashem — it is indispensable to also strengthen the health of the soul, even beyond that of the body.
Indeed, when one is in the countryside, one is much more drawn toward such occupations than when in the city. The spiritual addition must therefore be at least commensurate with what it is materially. This is, in fact, one of the reasons why we study Pirkei Avos* from the beginning of summer, when nature strengthens and the trees blossom.
Obviously, this in no way contradicts the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* that "you shall surely help him" — that is, the body, without breaking it. One must not resort to fasts and mortifications. On the contrary, one must harness the force of desire for the domain of holiness, until the fulfillment of the long-awaited promise that not only will the body not obstruct spirituality, not only will it assist it, but moreover — "the woman shall dominate the man" — meaning that the body will have the determining role.
I convey my blessing, in the words of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, that you have a summer in good health and in joy, materially and spiritually alike.
