Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the eve of Shabbos*. I am surprised that I am systematically led, in my letters to Chassidim*, to repeat many times the following saying of the Alter Rebbe* (see letter no. 3473), which has been printed numerous times and widely disseminated: "You express what you need, but you say nothing of the mission for which you are needed."

My intent is not to moralize. Indeed, when my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, related all of this, he concluded by specifying that this Chassid* of the Alter Rebbe* modified his conduct in accordance with the instructions he had received. Thereupon, his situation improved and even surpassed what it had been originally.

By making all of this known to us, we are granted the possibility that the same will occur, without difficulty, for each of us, with all the consequences that may follow.

May Hashem grant that in the future, your letters and, more generally, all those of the Chassidim*, begin with good news — the announcement of increased study of the revealed dimension of Torah* and Chassidus*, of more fervent prayer, and of positive influence exercised upon one's surroundings. It is after that that one will address the rest, for "Hashem made man upright" — meaning that He conceived first his spirituality and only then his material aspect. Letters should therefore be presented in the same manner.

As you request, I will mention your name so that you earn an ample livelihood, and moreover, that you do so with breadth of spirit. I will also mention the business to which you allude.

I will likewise mention the name of your wife and all your children, so that each obtains the fulfillment of their needs, as you write.

I conclude by evoking what is timely, in the words of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, and I wish you to receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner.
