To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Tzvi Hirsh (Rav T. H. Chitrik; see letter no. 1999),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of the thirty-second day of the Omer*, in which you tell me that you are compiling a collection of the explanations of our holy masters, arranged according to the weekly Parshah*.
It is clear that this is a good initiative, but for it to be complete, it is necessary to indicate the reference for each passage. In this way, one who wishes to deepen his understanding will be able to consult the original text.
Likewise, it is preferable not to introduce into this collection citations from other authors, even the greatest ones. This is self-evident. Similarly, it would be good to specify whether the citation is in the original (language) or translated from another language. May Hashem grant you success.
With my blessing,
For the Rebbe Shlita,
The secretary

To the Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Nissan (Rav N. Horowitz),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 12 Iyar*. You tell me that there is no one in your surroundings who could, without making it a vow, teach the Chassidic* discourses of the Torah Or* and the Likkutei Torah* (see letter no. 3259), in accordance with what was requested (by the Rebbe* himself) in the talk of the Shabbos* that blesses the month, before Chanukah*.
Our Sages* say: "If someone tells you he did not make an effort but nevertheless succeeded, do not believe him; if someone tells you he made an effort but did not succeed, do not believe him." Obviously, this does not mean that one should eliminate hours devoted to the study of the revealed dimension of the Torah*. All of this must indeed be an addition.
You cite the first chapter of Iggeres HaKodesh*, stating that the intellect enables the head to stand and maintain itself, that it gives rise to the love and fear of Hashem — that is, to the "arms" and the "body" of the soul. It is clear that this is the conclusion of this analysis, showing how understanding gives rise to love and fear — that is, to the emotions classified into three categories: kindness, which is the "right arm"; severity (which is the "left arm"); and mercy, which is the "body."
Subsequently, the text discusses maintaining the head and the arms. Indeed, it specifies the function of the loins, which maintain not only the emotions but also the intellect. There, the body is no longer mentioned, for what purpose would there be in enumerating these three domains "like a peddler" (in passing) when they have already been defined earlier? In fact, the analysis of the emotions is then more refined, and therefore "sparks of fire," "fear of Hashem," and "shame" are mentioned.
Subsequently, a parenthetical remark cites, regarding maintaining and upholding the head, the verse "she perceives and engages in commerce effectively." You consider that this alludes to the superficial aspect of this "commerce." In my opinion, this is not the case, for the text makes no mention whatsoever of a superficial aspect. In reality, the emphasis is on the fact that "she perceives" — on perception and intellect — following the preceding verse "she girds her loins with strength and strengthens her arms," in which the loins and body are indeed discussed. Then, perception itself is introduced.
With my blessing,
M. Schneerson
