Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 27 Iyar* and to the one that preceded it. I am pleased that you are in contact with this Rav. May Hashem grant that this initiate the change that will bring closer, at least somewhat, those who desire it but nevertheless think that the words of the verse "as the face is reflected in water" (the heart of man is reflected in that of his fellow — thus, some refrain from drawing closer to traditional values because of a lack of warmth on the part of those who could transmit them) have not yet been realized.

You are probably right in writing that the fault lies on both sides (on the one who transmits the values and on the one who wishes to draw closer to them) and that the distance between them has no logical justification. Nevertheless, it is good that the Chassidim* take the initiative of rapprochement.

Obviously, you may convey all of this in my name to the young men and, more generally, to the Chassidim*. Nevertheless, the action commanded and carried out on the basis of submission alone will not be the most effective on their part, except for the "faithful servant" who derives the most intense pleasure from submission, as various texts explain — in particular, the sequence of Chassidic* discourses of 5666 (1906, by the Rebbe Rashab*).

במענה על מכתבו מכ' כ"ז אייר והקודם להם. נהניתי על מה שעומד בקישור עםה רב.. ויה"ר שתהי' זה התחלת השינוי לקרב עכ"פ את אלו הרוצים להתקרב, אלא שלדעתם עוד לא נתקיים כמים הפנים לפנים, ואף כי בטח צודק בכתבו כי אשמים ב' הצדדים ושהריחוק הוא בלי שום טעם, הנה כדאי שאנ"ש יהיו המתחילים בצעדים לקרב, ומובן שיכול למסור זה לכל האברכים ואנ"ש בכלל בשמי, אף שגם זה מובן שקיום המעשה מצדם לא ע"י ציווי וקב"ע תפעל יותר (מלבד מי שהוא עבד נאמן שהקב"ע שלו מביאתו לתכלית התענוג וכמובאר בכ"מ ומהם בהמשך רס"ו)...
