Igrot Kodesh · Letter 350 — Haggadah Scholarship: The Four Cups and the Mah Nishtanah Questions

To my relative, the erudite man who fears Hashem,

Rav A., known as Dr. Hillman[1],

I greet and bless you,

I duly received your letter of 12 Adar. In the meantime, you will have received the Haggadah,* which I asked to have sent to you a second time, and the biography of the Alter Rebbe,* which appeared some time ago.

A few days ago I also received the Adar 5707 issue of the journal Sinai*[2]. I thank you for it, and I would be even more grateful if you could procure for me the earlier issues containing your Haggadah* commentaries. If those issues are no longer available, perhaps an offprint exists.

In reading through your commentaries, I saw your assertion that no question is raised about the four cups*[3] because they have not yet been drunk — unlike the other four questions, as the Mordechai* explains at the end of tractate Pesachim.* He notes that in Temple times the Seder* took place after the meal. This is also what the aforementioned Haggadah* states on page 35, and it is likewise the view of the Rambam.*

In my humble opinion, this explanation cannot be accepted, for the Pesach* sacrifice, the matzah,* and the bitter herbs* were also consumed after the questions concerning the need to dip the foods and to grill the meat[4] had been posed.

Regarding the references in the Mishneh Torah,*[5] a list of them is found at the end of the Rambam* in the Schlesinger edition. To my knowledge, it is the most complete one available on the subject.

זה איזה ימים שקבלתי ג"כ החוברת סיני לחודש אדר תש"ז ות"ח ע"ז ות"ח כפולות אם אפשר להמציא לי גם הפרקים הקודמים של הערות כב' על ההגדה, ואולי ישנם בתדפיס בפ"ע אם אין החוברות המתאימות, ולהעיר בחפזי במ"ש בהערותיו שם שלכן אין שואלין על הד' כוסות כי עדיין לא שתו אותם משא"כ שאר הקושיות וע"פ מ"ש במרדכי סוף פסחים שבזמן שביהמ"ק הי' קיים אוכלין הסעודה קודם הסדר (וכ"כ בהגדה נ"ל ע' 35 שאין כן דעת הרמב"ם) ולפענ"ד אאפ"ל כן כי גם הפסח מצה מצוה ומרור אכלו רק אחר שאילת הקושיות דמטבילין וצלי,

בענין מפרשי מקורות הי"ד הנה בסוף הרמב"ם הוצאת שולזינגר הדפיסו רשימת הנ"ל והיא רשימה היותר מלאה שראיתי במקצוע זה.
