To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Yisrael Zusman (Rav Y. Z. Dvurts; see letter no. 3259),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 17 Iyar*, in which you ask me about what I wrote to you (in letter no. 3259; see also letter no. 3729) — the assertion that the first point found outside the source can already be designated as "outside." You ask me what this means.

The expressions "revealed and hidden dimensions of the Torah*" or "body and soul of the Torah*" establish that each element, with all its component parts, presents two aspects simultaneously — one revealed and one hidden. Now, according to the revealed dimension of the Torah*, the first point outside the source no longer belongs to it. The same must therefore be true in the deep, spiritual dimension. You should consult, on this subject, the Reshimos of the Tzemach Tzedek* on Tehillim*, pages 118–119, paragraph 8.

In practical terms, the Chassidim* — including those who are truly the most senior — must know that the study of a Chassidic* discourse or fervent prayer is indeed the source itself, but that it provides no guarantee regarding what will happen afterward. An effort remains necessary so that the motivation of prayer and study extend to the next moment.

This is so even if the concern of that next moment is related to the fervent prayer or the study of that discourse — for example, reciting Tehillim* or studying Torah* following prayer. Indeed, the revealed dimension of the Torah* underscores the necessity of ensuring that the source is not cut off from the reservoir (of the mikveh*) that is alongside it, as the Mishnah*, the Gemara*, and the Poskim* establish.

You mention what you have not merited to attain, and you ask me whether this can be so for one who studies Torah* publicly. You know the account of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us — which also appears in a pamphlet (of his teachings) — establishing that it can indeed be so during public study (you should consult Tractate Chagigah* 15b and the Alter Rebbe's* Laws of Torah Study, chapter 4, paragraph 17).

Nevertheless, this account was publicized only once. Previously, it was not known, and this was even the case afterward. In general, such a fear is an effect of the evil inclination, a stratagem it uses to divert a person from public study, during which one benefits from the merit of the community. Seeing no other recourse, it resorts to deception and claims that one who fears Hashem will not place himself in such a situation (i.e., that one should not participate in public study). But one must follow the majority (and consider that this is indeed the proper course of action).

You ask me how to settle in the new quarter of Kfar Chabad*. I have already communicated my opinion to several Chassidim* (see letter no. 3495). One thereby causes harm to others, and there is therefore no reason to resort to deception, even if one could find permission to do so. Nevertheless, one must strive, to the full extent possible, to reside in the Kfar.

In my view, it is clear that this (residing in Kfar Chabad*) is the channel and vessel for receiving the blessing and success granted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. He continues to carry out his mission on High and invokes heavenly mercy for the Chassidim* residing in Kfar Chabad* in particular.

With my blessing for success,

M. Schneerson
