Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of Pesach Sheini*, in which you write that you have joined Yeshivah* Toras Emes (in Yerushalayim*).

May Hashem grant that this be at a good and fruitful moment. You will study the revealed dimension of the Torah* and Chassidus* there with genuine diligence and enthusiasm, and you will exert a positive influence on your friends so that they do the same.

It is no doubt unnecessary to explain at length that one obtains Hashem's help in this matter by guiding one's surroundings and bringing them closer to the Torah* and mitzvos* in general, and to Chassidus*, its practices and customs, in particular. Indeed, the Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure" (in the manner that a person acts toward Him), but in greatly increased proportion.

I received, in their time, your two previous letters. You tell me that in the synagogue where you read the Torah*, it is the custom for the reader to wear a tallis*, unlike our custom (if the Torah reader is not married, he does not wear the large tallis during the reading). You are expected to adopt this practice, and you ask me what to do.

You will indeed wear it, for on the one hand an individual must conform to the community, and on the other hand, wearing the large tallis* is also a mark of deference toward those present, according to the Magen Avraham*, chapter 18, paragraph 2, when they, or most of them, desire it. One must therefore not show them disrespect by refusing to wear it.

במענה על מכתבו מפסח שני, בו כותב אשר נכנס לישיבת תורת אמת.

הנה יה"ר שיהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת, וילמוד בהתמדה ושקידה אמיתיות הן בתורת הנגלה והן בתורת החסידות, וישפיע גם על חבירו בכגון דא, ובודאי למותר להאריך, אשר, לסייעתא דשמיא בזה זוכים ע"י שישפיע בהסביבה לקרבם לתורה ולמצות בכלל, ולחסידות הדרכותי' והנהגותי' בפרט, כי מדתו של הקב"ה היא מדה כנגד מדה (אלא שכמה פעמים ככה).

שני המ' הקודמים נתקבלו בעתם. ובשאלתו, שמנהג ביהכנ"ס בו הוא בעל קורא, שמתעטף הב"ק בטלית בעת הקריאה (ודלא כמנהגינו) ותובעים שגם הוא יתעטף כנ"ל - ימלא דרישתם, כי א) בכגון דא על היחיד לנהוג כהרבים. ב) בעטיפת טלית יש גם ענין של כבוד הצבור (מג"א סי"ח סק"ב), וכיון שהציבור או רובו מקפיד ע"ז, אין לזלזל בכבודם (ע"י אי העטיפה).
