Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, which was undated. As you request, I will mention your name at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that you have long days and good years.

It would be good to study the "Gate of Trust in Hashem" of the Chovos HaLevavos* and to meditate on the ideas set forth there. You will think, even for a brief moment, that every Jew, man or woman, believes with pure faith that "no place is devoid of His Presence." And you know the explanation of our Sages*, based on the verse "strength and joy are in His place." It is also said that "one must not enter the gate of the king carrying a sack."

There is therefore no reason to disturb His joy — "strength and joy being in His place" — on account of the sadness of a certain person, whoever it may be, even if it may seem, fleetingly, that such a feeling is justified. And this meditation need not be profound. A brief reflection suffices for this.

You also know the ruling of the Rambam*, cited by the Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim*, chapter 241, that one should serve Hashem "in all your ways." Now, this service of Hashem must necessarily be joyful, as it is said: "Because you did not serve Hashem your Elokim* with joy."

The joy of the mitzvah* is particularly important. Indeed, "in all your ways" it is possible to fulfill a mitzvah*. Joy must therefore reign in your life, as the Rambam* states at the end of the Laws of Lulav*, and as my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, reproduces in his introduction to Kuntres Etz HaChaim* and Kuntres HaAvodah*.

You will therefore turn your mind away from your thoughts and from yourself. And you will devote yourself to the love of your fellow and to the love of Hashem. May Hashem grant you long days and good years.

במענה על מכתבו - בלי הוראת זמן הכתיבה - הנה כבקשתו אזכירו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע לאריכות ימים ושנים טובות, וכדאי הי' שילמוד שער הבטחון בספר חובת הלבבות ויתבונן בהענינים המבוארים בו, וכשיתבונן אפילו לשעה קלה אשר כל אחד ואחת מבני ישראל מאמין באמונה פשוטה אשר לית אתר פנוי מיני', וידוע פסק רז"ל ע"פ הכתוב עוז וחדוה במקומו, ועפמ"ש שאין לבוא בשער המלך בלבוש שק, הרי אי אפשר לבלבל שמחתו של זה דעוז וחדוה במקומו, ע"י עצבות של מי שהוא, ושל מי שיהי', אפילו אם נדמה לו לפי שעה שיש יסוד לזה, ואיך צריך להתעמק בזה כי אפילו התבוננות קלה מספקת.

עוד זאת, שהרי ידוע פסק הרמב"ם והובא בשו"ע או"ח סי' רמ"א, שעבודת השי"ת צריכה להיות בכל דרכיך, וידוע ג"כ הפסק שעבודת השי"ת צריכה להיות בשמחה, וכמ"ש תחת אשר לא עבדת גו', וגודל הענין דשמחה של מצוה, וכיון שבכל דרכיך יש בזה אפשריות דענין של מצוה, מובן שצ"ל השמחה במעונו, וכמבואר ברמב"ם סוף הלכות לולב והועתק במכתב כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בהקדמתו לס' קונטרס עץ חיים ולקונטרס העבודה, ויסיח דעתו ממחשבתו ומעצמו, ויעסוק בענינים דאהבת ישראל ואהבת השם, והשי"ת יתן לו אריכות ימים ושנים טובות.
