To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yaakov (Rav Y. Peles, of the Holy Land) and his wife, Mrs. Rachel,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos* and to the one that preceded it. I was pleased to learn that you give a class to young men every Shabbos*. Without making it a vow, I will mention the names of these young men at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that they obtain the fulfillment of their needs in general and that they intensify their study of the revealed dimension of the Torah* and of Chassidus*. In this way, they will multiply Hashem's blessings and the success He grants in all their concerns.

You ask me what the "vital soul" is. In general, it is discussed in the first chapter of the Tanya* (which deals with the animal soul). It divides into an intellectual soul (which uses the intellect to satisfy man's needs) and an animal soul (which enables man to satisfy his purely physical needs). You should consult the notes on the Tanya*, on page 81, and the references indicated there.

You mention those among these young men who will leave for the army in six months and the request they make on this subject. There is still a semester before their enlistment, and it is therefore too early to consider this question.

You ask me how to obtain copies of the Tanya* and other study books at a good price. You should contact the youth of the Chabad* Association on this matter. Indeed, there is no reason to duplicate the effort. For various reasons, centralization is necessary. You will therefore serve as the intermediary and representative of the youth of the Chabad* Association in this area.

As you request, I will mention in particular, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, your son Yosef Yitzchak, to whom Hashem will grant long life. His name, indeed, is an indication (of his value, since it is the name of the Frierdiker Rebbe*), and may Hashem grant that he grow to possess the fear of Hashem and become a Chassid* and a Torah* scholar. You will lead him, as well as your other children, to Torah*, to the marriage canopy, and to good deeds.

במענה על מכתבו ממוצש"ק והקודם לו, הנה נהניתי מהשיעור שלומד עם בחורים מדי שבת בשבתו, ובלי נדר אזכיר שמותיהם על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, בעת רצון, להמצטרך להם בכלל ולהוספה בשיעורים בורת הנגלה ובתורת החסידות, שעי"ז יתוסף בברכות השי"ת והצלחתו בהמצטרך להם.

בשאלתו בפירוש הנפש החיונית, הנה בכלל הכוונה בנפש החיונית להנפש שאודותה מדובר בפרק א' דתניא שמתחלקת לנפש השכלית ונפש הבהמית, יעיין בזה בהערות לתניא עמדו פ"א ובהמקומות שנסמנו שם.

בהנוגע לאותם מהנ"ל שהולכים לצבע בעוד חצי שנה, ורצונם בקשר עם זה, הנה כיון שהוא בעוד חצי שנה עדיין מוקדם זה.

בנוגע להשגת ספרי תניא וספרי לימוד בכלל בזול, הנה יפנה בזה לצעירי אגודת חב"ד, כי אין להכפיל הענינים, ומכמה טעמים צריכים לרכזם, והוא יהי' הממוצע והב"כ דצעירי אגו"ח בהנוגע להנ"ל.

כבקשתו אזכיר על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע במיוחד את בנם יוסף יצחק שליט"א, ושמא מילתא היא, ויה"ר מהשי"ת שיגדל להיות ירא שמים חסיד ולמדן, ויגדלוהו עם שאר ילדיהם שיחיו לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים.
