To the great Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, an esteemed man of generous conduct, a communal leader filled with enthusiasm, of manifold accomplishments, a man of quality from an illustrious family, Rav Yitzchak Meir HaKohen (Rav I. M. Lewin; see letters no. 1032, 1045, 1098, and 3625),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 25 Nissan*, together with its contents, and I immediately address what is timely — namely, the religious front (which it was necessary to establish in the Holy Land for the elections; see letters no. 3026, 3489, 3503, 3558, 3599, 3625, 3677, and 3741), which would bring together, in particular, Agudah* and Poalei Agudas Yisrael* (the Orthodox political parties). In my view, its formation is an absolute necessity, and I have good hope that it will indeed pave the way toward a united religious front (integrating the other religious parties as well). Indeed, after the visit paid to me by Mr. Binyamin Mintz, my conviction that this approach is correct has been strengthened.

My position is therefore clear and expressed in definitive terms. In order not to complicate the situation — on the contrary, to facilitate the formation of this united front — the emphasis must, for now, be placed solely on the elections (and not on what divides these parties), without introducing extraneous elements.

אאשר מכתבו מכ"ה בניסן עם המוסג"ב, ואבוא מיד לענינא דיומא, הוא ענין חזית הדתית, ובפרט חזית מאוחדת בין אודה ופאג"י, שלדעתי הוא הכרח גמור, ותקותי, אשר עי"ז תגדל האפשרות גם לחזית דתית מאוחדת. ואחרי שבקרני מר בנימין שי' מינץ, עוד נתחזקה אצלי עמדתי זו.

כדי שלא להסביך המצב, אלא אדרבה להקל התנאים לחזית מאוחדת, דעתי ברורה וחזקה אשר לעת עתה נקודת הכובד צריכה להיות רק בהנוגע לבחירות בלבד, ואין לערב בזה ענינים צדדיים...
