To the great Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, devotes himself to communal needs, and is of generous conduct, Rav Dov Yehudah (Rav D. Y. Shochat; see letters no. 1211, 3572, and 2784),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 12 Iyar*, in which I was pleased to learn of the enthusiasm you show for founding a synagogue and a house of study in a neighborhood of the city of Toronto* where the Jewish population is large.

You know the teaching of our holy master (see letter no. 2328), the Rebbe Maharash* — grandfather of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us — who said: "They say that if one cannot go under the obstacle, one must go over it. I say, for my part, that one should go over it from the outset." And it is also said: "Open wide your mouth and I will fill it."

May Hashem therefore grant that your initiative be crowned with success. You will grow and adorn the Torah*. You will do the same for the service of Hashem of the heart, which is prayer. It will therefore be both a synagogue and a house of study, as our Sages* explain regarding the verse "Hashem loves the gates (Shaar — the gate of the Temple, where one prays, can also be read Shi'ur — study) of Tzion*."

Our Sages* teach in Tractate Bava Basra* 15b that one who receives a coin from Iyov* is blessed, for he was a man of uprightness who feared Hashem. I therefore enclose a check from one of the funds of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*. You will use it for the first payments (related to this synagogue). May Hashem grant that you know success and fully receive the blessing of Hashem.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ב אייר, נהניתי לקרות בו אשר מתחיל בהתעוררות להקים ביהכ"נ וביהמ"ד בחלק עיר טורונטה המרובה באוכלסין דבני ישראל, וכבר ידועה הוראת נשיאינו הק' אאזו"ר של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר - זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, די וועלט זאגט אז מען קען ניט ארונטער דארפמען אריבער, און איך זאג אז מען דארף לכתחילה אריבער והרי כבר נאמר הרחב פיך ואמלאהו וחפץ ה' בידו יצליח, להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה, ביחד עם עמוד העבודה שבלב זו תפלה, ביהכ"נ ידח, וכדרז"ל עה"כ אוהב ד' שערי ציון.

וע"פ הוראת רז"ל שכל הנוטל שכל הנוטל פרוטה מאיוב ה"ה מתברך מפני שהי' איש תם ירא אלקים גו' (ב"ב ט"ו ב), הנה מוסג"פ המחאה מאחת הקופות של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, אשר ישתמש בה להתשלומים הראשונים, ויה"ר שיהי' ההצלחה והסייעתא דשמיא במילואה.
