To the great Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yitzchak HaKohen (Rav I. Hendel, of Montreal; see letters no. 143 and 158),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 9 Iyar*. I often emphasize to the Chassidim* that the Torah* and the mitzvos* enable one to bind oneself to Hashem and to His teaching, and that the spiritual situation depends on the material situation. I am therefore particularly surprised to observe that those who are studying in the Yeshivah* and even the Rabbanim* write to me about everything that happens to them, but do not say a single word about any of this — not even by allusion.

Obviously, I am not asking them to boast in their letters, "See all that I have accomplished." Nevertheless, they can describe what is being accomplished in their surroundings and, a fortiori, within the four cubits of the one writing to me — in his own home. There is no pride in this.

There is no need to say more about what is perfectly obvious and should be even more so for those studying in the Yeshivah*, who do not tell me what is happening there, even though a new study cycle has just begun (after the festival of Pesach*).

My father-in-law, the Rebbe*, received from the elder Chassidim* the following saying: "One must get up (each morning, at the end of the night) completely different." May Hashem therefore grant that in this regard, the situation be radically different.

במענה על מכתבו מט' אייר, ולפלא גדול שלמרות שהנני מעורר את אנ"ש לפרקים קרובים אשר בתורה והמצות הם עיני ההתקשרות לד' ותורתו, והמצב ברוחניות בו תלוי המצב בגשמיות, הנה אפילו התמימים והרבנים שלנו כותבים על כל דבר ודבר, אבל אינם מזכירים ע"ד הנ"ל אפילו בכלות, ולא אפי' ברמז, ומובן שאין כוונתי שתפארו במכתביהם, ראו פעולות שפעלתי, אבל הזכיר מהנעשה בזה בתוך הסביבה בה נמצאים, עאכו"כ בתוך הד' אמות של הכותב בתוך ביתו, אין בזה ענין של גאוה וכו', ואין להאריך בדבר הפשוט, ובהנוגע אל התמימים עוד גדולה יות, כי גם ע"ד הנעשה בישיבה אינו מזכיר דבר, אף שזה עתה התחיל זמן לימודים חדש.

ויה"ר שע"פ פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר ששמע בשם זקני החסידים, אז מען דארף אויפשטיין גאר א אנדערער, הנה גם בזה ישתנו הדברים מן הקצה אל הקצה...
