Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Iyar*, in which I read with pleasure that you have set aside a fixed time for the study of "the soul of the Torah*," as the Zohar* puts it — that is, its inner teaching, which in our era has been revealed through Chassidus*.

The Mishnah* says that "the deed is essential, and not the study." You are therefore surely making every effort to observe its customs and practices to the full extent of your ability.

One of its practices is love of one's fellow, which leads the true Chassid* — or the one who strives to be one — to disseminate this teaching and all that it entails among his surroundings, whether near or far.

You tell me that your conception of the service of Hashem and of His love is changeable (sometimes strong and sometimes weak). Do not be discouraged by this, Heaven forbid. The Tanya* and several other texts explain that this is so because of the battle waged by the evil inclination. Sometimes "one rises and the other falls" (the good prevails over the evil); at other times, the reverse is true.

When the Land of Israel was conquered for the first time, it was said: "I will drive him (the enemy) out little by little," and the same is true for every Jew in the conquest of his spiritual Eretz Yisrael* — the portion that has been personally assigned to him. This cannot be accomplished all at once. It must be gradual. And our Sages* tell us that effort invested in this manner is necessarily fruitful.

The same applies to concentration. It is common for the situation to improve in stages, not all at once by passing from one extreme to the other, except in exceptional cases. Therefore, place your trust in "He Who fashions the hearts together." For everything depends on the one who invests the effort. And if at times one seems to retreat, this must have the effect of arousing additional strength and increased courage — not discouragement, Heaven forbid. It is in this way that one will achieve the final victory in this battle.

You are surely reciting Tehillim* every day after the morning prayer. You should also make this practice known to those around you. You will find the words to explain that it is particularly relevant to those who are in the army, which is based on discipline and obedience. Now, if one must obey officers who are human beings and who must themselves adopt such an attitude, how much more so is this necessary toward the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He.

I send you my blessing to convey good tidings of all the above. You will also transmit my regards to your neighbor, whose name I will mention, together with that of all the members of his family, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, the leader of Israel, as he requested of you.
