Greetings and blessings,
I do not usually express myself on matters that have no bearing on concrete action. Nevertheless, the subject of this letter may have repercussions for the future. It appears that you consider it the responsibility of others to act in order to develop your synagogue. Your role, on the other hand, consists solely in giving classes to those who come and in delivering speeches before them.
It seems to me that I have already given you my opinion on this subject in several of our previous exchanges. The members of a synagogue are absorbed by their activities. The effort expected of them is therefore quite sufficient, especially since that effort is physical or financial. If one wants the synagogue to develop normally, there is therefore no reason to wait for people to come on their own and, in turn, attract other members.
Hashem has granted you the success of having some members who are also interested in the expansion of the synagogue. Chassidus* teaches that one must "wear the garments of the one whom one intends to elevate." Imagine, therefore, that you yourself were one of the members of this synagogue, residing at some distance from it, and that you were celebrating, for example, a family simchah*. Elementary logic would lead you to construct the following a fortiori reasoning: "If the Rav — who, according to the common understanding and perception in the United States, is a salaried employee of the synagogue — nevertheless celebrates his family events in another location, how much more should I myself adopt this attitude. Later on, Hashem will help and this synagogue will grow. Then, everyone will turn toward it, and I will do so as well."
I do not wish to say more about what is painful, especially since it appears to be not an exceptional situation but rather a deliberate position.
I do not mean only that you must avoid anyone feeling offended or even surprised, wondering why this is so. The members of a synagogue do not go looking for questions and surprises. Only certain matters are considered by them to be of interest, and they will therefore not bother you about this or reproach you. Nevertheless, the risk I described earlier exists, and if they indeed adopt such an attitude, you can imagine the consequences for the development of the synagogue.
I emphasize once again that, even when considering the necessity of earning a livelihood, it is accepted nowadays that the pursuit of one's sustenance must follow natural channels. It is precisely in such a case that success can be supernatural. Now, your recourse to natural channels consists of seeking another synagogue. But instead of telling yourself that you do not earn a generous living, being disappointed and sad about it, why not ask yourself how to earn a better living by employing natural channels? For this, the synagogue must be developed!
I had told you to take advantage of the festival of Pesach* to organize a Seder* in the neighborhood where the synagogue is located. The members could have participated in this Seder* and invited guests to the meal. It appears that none of this was done.
For Lag BaOmer*, or close to that date, it is possible to plan an activity for the children of the neighborhood. About this, too, you say nothing in your letter.
I once heard an explanation regarding success, and several Chassidus* texts establish that it is indeed correct. When one undertakes no action to expand one's sustenance, or even when what one does runs counter to it, not only does one not undermine it, but moreover, the opposite is true — one increases it, against all logic.
May Hashem grant that this be the case here — that in the future you make use of this success. Not only will you earn a generous living despite your conduct, but moreover, you will first earn a generous living by adopting the proper attitude, and then use the success to greatly increase all of this.
