To the Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shalom (Rav Shalom Posner; see letter no. 2185),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 3 Iyar*, in which you tell me that you have been offered the opportunity to publish a book of commentaries or explanations on the Torah*, for the benefit of the high school or the Yeshivah*. It appears that it also falls to you to find the donors who will finance this publication.

Regarding the commercial aspect, you should consult people on the ground, who will tell you whether such an undertaking is profitable. Indeed, someone who makes a donation to the Yeshivah* for the printing of a book will have difficulty making another one immediately afterward that goes directly to the Yeshivah* (thus, in addition to the problem of financial viability, there is also the loss of donors).

Regarding the project itself, you surely do not intend to write in the book that it was published by the Yeshivah*. That is not the purpose of Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*. You are therefore presumably thinking of writing that a particular person publishes this work and donates the proceeds to the Yeshivah*. If that is indeed the case, you may consider this undertaking, provided it is financially viable.

במענה על מכתבו מג' אייר, בו כותב אודות ההצעה שיקבל להדפיס ספר דרוש או חדו"ת, שההכנסה תהי' לטובת היי סקול או הישיבה,, וכנראה שעליו בעצמו להשיג מנדבים להוצאות הדפוס.

והנה בהנוגע לצד המסחר שבדבר עליו להתייעץ עם האנשים על אתר, אם כדיא הדבר מנקודת מבט הכספי, כי הרי מי שינדב להישיבה להדפיס ספר, קשה לפעול אצלו שינדב בסמיכות לזה על הישיבה עצמה. ובהנוגע לעצם הענין, הנה בטח אין כוונתו שיודפס בהספר שהישיבה הדפיסה ספר פלוני, כי אין ענין כזה שייך לישיבת תו"ת, וכנראה הכוונה, שבהספר יהי' כתוב שפב"פ הוציאו לאור, ומקדיש ההכנסה לטובת ישיבה מוסד זה, ואם כן הוא, יש מקום להצעה הנ"ל בהתאם למה שיבררו בהשאלה הכספית...
