Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to learn that the young man, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and whose conduct is virtuous, Rav Mordechai Eliezer Sharfstein, prayed in your synagogue during this past festival of Pesach*. It was in this way that the question of the mechitzah* (separation between men and women) in that synagogue was raised (see letters no. 2782 and 3695).

From what he told me, the members of the synagogue mobilized on this matter (so that this separation would conform to Halachah*), thereby demonstrating how true are the words of our Sages*: "I sleep in exile, but my heart is awake, in order to fulfill the Torah* and the mitzvos*." It is surely unnecessary to tell you how important all of this is. Nevertheless, I rely on the statement of our Sages*, found in the Sifra* at the beginning of Parshas* Tzav, that "one encourages eagerness in those who naturally possess this quality." I therefore allow myself to add a few words, solely to underscore this importance.

Without directly addressing the question that was posed, the situation of these recent months accords with the statement of our Sages* regarding the first and last ablutions (Tractate Yoma* 83b: "In the absence of the first ablutions, one eats pork. In the absence of the last ablutions, one commits a crime" — for it is told that an innkeeper had the custom of serving kosher meat to Jews and pork to non-Jews. He distinguished between them by the fact that the former washed their hands before eating while the latter did not. Once, a Jew was among his customers who did not wash his hands, and the innkeeper therefore served him pork. Similarly, someone killed his wife because she had given away all the valuables the couple possessed to a stranger. The stranger had presented himself to her as sent by her husband and, as proof, told her what they had eaten at the previous meal. He was able to do so because the husband had not washed his hands at the end of the meal). It is well known that most of those who attend the synagogue fall into this category (where one imperfection can lead them to an infinitely graver failing, as in the examples above), along with their family members. In their eyes, the construction of a mechitzah* in the synagogue is indeed a sanctification of Hashem's Name. And one can deduce from this how they perceive the opposite — in accordance with the statement of our Sages* that "one who, during his lifetime, did not witness the rebuilding of the Beis HaMikdash*... must consider that it was destroyed during his lifetime" (Yerushalmi* Yoma, chapter 1, paragraph 1; see also Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 10, p. 150).

When Hashem grants someone the ability to influence his surroundings — particularly if that person is carrying out a holy mission, and especially if he is a Rav, occupying an important position in the rabbinical world — he must use that influence fully, morning and evening, to strengthen the words of the Torah*, specifically by building a mechitzah* acceptable according to all opinions.

Thank Hashem, it is precisely in this recent period — in this particularly dark and obscure exile — that young people, and even those who are not so young, have become more attentive in this country to various practices connected with the fear of Hashem. Everything therefore depends on the actions of the community leaders, who are its "eyes."

May Hashem grant you success and enable you to accomplish all of this without difficulty and very soon.

With my blessing for success and to convey good tidings,

M. Schneerson
