To the great Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav M. D. Wolner,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of 28 Nissan*, in which you describe the visit of the youth of the Chabad* association to your city (Migdal Ashkelon) and the impression they made there.

It is unnecessary to remind someone such as yourself that every gesture of a Jewish man or woman, animated by the vitality of Torah* and mitzvos*, exists only to modify speech and action on a daily basis. That is its very purpose, and the Mishnah* specifies that "the deed, and not the study, is essential." It is in this way that one can assess the value of this activity and the inspiration it provides.

From what you write, I have good hope that the evaluation was positive — that the visit of the youth of the Chabad* Association did indeed have a concrete effect. Indeed, the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, explains (see letters no. 786, 2885, 3235, and 3590) the expression "master of the place" (applied to the Rav of the community — in this case, to Rav Wolner). In practice, the Rav directs the place literally.

Consequently, you will surely take advantage of such occasions to strengthen Judaism and its dissemination — in particular, that of proper education, which is a sacred mission at all times and in all places, but more specifically in this era of Ikvesa d'Meshicha* (the footsteps of Moshiach*), when the exile is particularly dark, and in our Holy Land, "toward which the eyes of Hashem are always directed, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year."

I thank you for gladdening me by conveying good tidings of all this.

נהניתי לקבל מכתבו מכ"ח ניסן, בו כותב אודות ביקור צעירי אגודת חב"ד במחנם הט' והרושם אשר השאירו, ובודאי לדכוותי' למותר לעוררו, אשר ככל שיקרה תנועת נפש איש אושה הישראלים, בחיות של יהדות בתורה ומצות, הנה קיומה של תנועה זו ותכליתה הוא, הבאת התנועה בפועל בעינינים של דבור ומעשה ובחיי היום יומים, וכמר[ו]מז בדבר שמנה אל המדרש עיקר אלא המעשה, ובזה תבחן גם התנועה וגם ההתעוררות, ותקותי, מתאים למכתב כת"ר, שהבחינה עלתה בטוב וביקור צעירי אגודת חב"ד פעל גם בהנוגע למעשה, ועל פי פירוש רבנו הזקן בעל התניא והשולחן ערוך בפירוש התואר מרא דאתרא, אשר רב המקום הוא הבע"ב של המקום, הרי בודאי גם כת"ר ינצל הזדמנויות כאלו להחזקת היהדות והפצתה וביחוד בשדה החינוך הכשר מלאכת ד', בכל המקומות ובכל הזמנים, ובפרט בזמן דעקבתא דמשיחא ימי דגלות חשך כפול ומכופל, ובארצנו הקדושה אשר עיני ה"א בה מראשית שנה ועד אחרית שנה, ות"ח עם ישמחני בבשו"ט בזה.
