Igrot Kodesh · Letter 345 — Mazal Tov on Birth of Daughter Rachel: Torah Thought on Her Name

12 Adar Sheni 5708,
To the learned Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav M.(1),
I greet and bless you,
Your brother, Rav Y.(2), informed me that you had a daughter and that you named her Rachel(3). I wish by this letter to thank you for having accepted my counsel and to express my blessings that you raise her to Torah*, the wedding canopy, and good deeds, in material and spiritual abundance.
I will conclude with a Torah* thought. The significance of a name is well known, and the Yonat Elem*, in chapter 5, states that 'Vayehi Or' — 'And there was light' — has the same numerical value* as Rachel.
The Torah Or* indicates that Jewish souls, when they reveal themselves, are likewise called Rachel. And so it is for every Jew, whose will is to submit to Hashem, to be absorbed in His Light, in a resolute and enthusiastic manner.
Among Jews, every attainment must come through effort. The quality of light is revealed when it emerges from darkness. This is why our Sages say, in the Midrash Bereishit Rabbah*, chapter 3, that 'Vayehi Or' corresponds to the book of Shemot*, which recounts how the children of Israel departed from darkness to know a great light(4). The occasion does not lend itself to developing all of this.

נודעתי ע"י אחיו הרר"י שי' אשר נולדה לו בת ואח"כ אשר נקרא שמה בישראל רחל ואשלח בזה תודתי על שנתקבלה הצעתי, וברכותי שיגדלוה לתורה לחופה ולמע"ט מתוך הרחבה בגו"ר.
ולסיים בד"ת שמא מילתא היא וכתב ביונת אלם פ"ה ויי אור בגימ' רחל, ויש לבאר עפמ"ש בתורה אור רד"ה ותוסף אסתר כנס"י נקראת בשם בחינת רחל כשהיא בבחי' התגלות וכך הוא בכל או"א מישראל שיהא רצונו להבטל ולהכלל באורו ית' והוא בהתגלות ובהתלהבות.
והנה בבנ"י כל דבר צ"ל ע"י עבודה ויתרון האור מן החושך דוקא כידוע. ובזה יובן מרז"ל ב"ר פ"ג, ה' ויהי אור כנגד ספר ואלה שמות שבו יצאו ישראל מאפילה לאורה ואכמ"ל.
