To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yosef (Rav Y. Flyer; see letter no. 2236),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the eve of Shabbos*, at the end of the customary month of miracles (that of Nissan*) and at the beginning of the "month of radiance" (that of Iyar*), when those who made the world shine were born (the Patriarchs, according to Tractate Rosh Hashanah* 11a; see letter no. 3426). I was pleased to learn therein that you have set to work on your sacred mission of providing a good education, and that you are also doing so in a new sector of Chicago.

Our Sages* say that all beginnings are difficult. May Hashem grant that you not be distressed by the problems that are common in such matters. On the contrary, these should awaken within you new energy and reveal a hidden strength.

Indeed, medicine has recently discovered that one can protect the organism from a serious disease by inoculating it in an attenuated form. In this way, the body creates defenses and weapons to prevent it from contracting the disease. This is the principle of vaccination.

The same applies to moral healing, as the great master, the Rambam*, states in his Eight Chapters. One finds there a comparison between moral and physical healing. When one appears to be confronted with a slight difficulty, the soul prepares weapons that enable it to dispel the true veils and obstacles.

May Hashem grant that your mission be fruitful — that you sow and plant also in the neighborhood of the city where you are preparing to establish a good school. You will instill in the students the love of Hashem, of Torah*, and of one's fellow. As you know, it is said that "Avraham was one" and "his seed inherited the entire land." This remains true at the present time, for "his seed" does not refer only to the following generation, but also includes what he planted and what resulted from his action.

You surely know the saying of our holy masters that "everything is determined by the beginning." You should therefore acquire land that will allow for a spacious building. And the edifice itself should be large, as it is stated: "Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it."

With my blessing, in accordance with the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, that you and your wife have "a healthy summer,"

במענה על מכתבו מעש"ק שילהי חדש המלומד בנסים והתחלת חדש זיו שנולדו בו זיותני עולם. נעם לי לקרות בו אשר.. נגש לעבודת בקדש במקצוע חינוך הכשר וגם במחוז דעיר שיקאגא חדש, ויה"ר שלא יתרשם, ע"פ מרז"ל כל התחלות קשות, מקישויים הרגילים בענינים כמו אלו, ואדרבה זה יעורר בו תוספת כח וגילוי כחות הנעלמים, וכידוע ג"כ בתגליות חכמת הרפואה בתקופה האחרונה, אשר בכדי שהגוף יעמוד בפני מחלות תקיפות ל"ע, הנה זורקים בו מעין ודוגמא קלושה ממחלה זו, ועי"ז יוצא הגוף כלי זיין וכלי מלחמה נגד המחלה שלא תבוא כלל בגבולו, והוא הנקרא בשם וואקסניישאן (Vaccination), ועד"ז הוא ברפואת הנפש, וכידוע מאמר המורה הגדול רבנו הרמב"ם בשמונה פרקים שלו, בהדמיון שבין רפואת הנפש ורפואת הגוף, ע"י העלם מדומה קלוש יוצרת הנפש כלי זיין וכלי מלחמה, שמבטלים ההעלמות והסתרים אמיתיים.

ויה"ר שיצליח בעבודתו הנ"ל לזרוע ולנטוע גם בר[ו]בע העיר שמתכונן לייסד שם בית חינוך הכשר, וישפיע בהמתחנכים אהבת השם אהבת התורה ואהבת ישראל, וכבר ידוע אשר גם על ימינו אלה חל מה שנאמר, אחד הי' אברהם וירש זרעו את כל הארץ, והרי זרעו האו לאו דוקא בנים בדור שלאחריו אלא גם זריעתו ותוצאות פעולותו.

בודאי ידוע להם פתגם רבותינו נשיאינו - ווי מען שטעלט זיך אוועק אזוי גייט עס, ובמילא יקנו מגרש מתאים לבנין בהרחבה וכן הבנין עצמו יהי' באופן כזה, ודייק הכתוב הרחב פיך ואמלאהו.

בברכה כפתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע צו א געזונטער זומער לו ולזוגתו שיחיו.
