To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Nosson Dovid (Rav N. D. Rosenblum; see letters no. 3025, 3122, and 3783),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you ask me about the vowel signs, according to the teaching of the esoteric dimension of the Torah*.

The sanctity not only of these signs but also of their names (see letter no. 3386) is established by the Tikkunei Zohar* — Tikkun 5 and the introduction, page 7b — Tikkun 69, by the Zohar Chadash*, page 99c, and by the Tikkunim*, according to which these names are composed of the initial letters of the names of angels.

Regarding their numerical value, in the simplest sense: each dot has the value of ten, and each line has the value of six. Thus, the numerical value of the tzeirei* (two dots — vowelized as "ei"), for example, is twenty. Likewise, you should consult the introduction to the Tikkunei Zohar*, which states that the numerical value of the kamatz* (vowelized as "a") is sixteen.

I am enclosing what has been published recently. No doubt you will study this text with all the interest it deserves.

At times, the vowel signs are cited according to their names. Thus, the introduction of the Tikkunei Zohar*, at page 7b, states that the letter-count of the patach* (vowelized as "a") equals a Yud*. The commentators explain that the letters forming the name of this vowel sign have a numerical value of twenty in reduced form.

במענה על מכתבו בו שואל ע"ד הנקודות ע"פ תורת הח"ן.

הנה בנוגע לקדושתם, ולא רק קדושת עצמם אלא אפילו קדושת שמותיהם - מובן ממ"ש בתקוני זהר תקון ה', בהקדמה (ז, ב), בתקון ס"ט, זהר חדש (צט, ג) בתיקונים, אשר אפילו השמות שלהם הם ר"ת של מלאכים.

ובנוגע להגימטריא שלהם, הנה הוא כשפוטו, שכל נקודה (פינטעלע) הוא עשר, וכל קו ששה, ולכן לדוגמא צירא (..) הוא עשים וכיו"ב, ולדוגמא עיין בתקוני זהר בהקדמה, אשר קמ"ץ בגימטריא ששה עשר, וכיו"ב.

מוסג"פ ממה שנדפס בעת האחרונה שבטח יעיין בו מתאים להתוכן.

לפעמים מחשבים הנקודות ע"פ שמם, וכמו בהקדמת הת"ז שם (ז, ב): פתח, בחושבן אותיותיו איהו יו"ד, שפי' המפרשים, שהאותיות של שם נקודה זו - בגימט' עשרים (במספר קטן).
