Tiferes* of Tiferes* (2 Iyar*) 5715

Brooklyn, New York

To the participants in the founding meeting of the youth of the Chabad* Association, in New York, may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure the account of your first meeting. Immediately following the Chassidic* farbrengen* of the Shabbos* on which the month of radiance (that of Iyar*) was blessed — at which farbrengen* the Rebbe requested the creation, in the United States, of a youth organization of the Chabad* Association comparable to that which exists in the Holy Land — you set to work on the important task of organizing the youth of the Chabad* Association, in accordance with the instruction of our holy master (see also Sefer HaSichos, Summer 5700, from page 44).

The purpose of a Chassidic* farbrengen* is to provide motivation and to foster concrete action. Various concepts of the Torah* demonstrate that there must be no interruption between such a farbrengen* and the beginning of action. This is also emphasized by the festival that just passed — Pesach* — which is introduced by the search for chametz* (see what the Alter Rebbe* says on this subject in his Siddur*; and Rav Hai Gaon, cited in Sha'ar HaKollel*, says: "It is an inheritance from our ancestors"). Now, one must not interrupt between the blessing recited at that time and the beginning of the search. In this case, the blessing is the motivation, the heavenly call (see, in the Torah Or*, the discourse "To understand the meaning of the blessings," in the Likkutei Torah* on three Parshiyos*), and the action is the verification itself.

One can conclude that a single meeting does not suffice. Indeed, one must also continue the action outside.

You ask me about your program of action and your activities. I am surprised by this question and by the doubt you may feel in this matter. Various talks delivered at numerous farbrengens* detail all of this. Moreover, the youth of the Chabad* Association have been active in Eretz Yisrael* for several years, as was stated during this meeting. You must therefore emulate their qualities.

Nevertheless, in order to fulfill your request, I will briefly cite several points here.

In general, the action of man is a conquest (see Tikkunei Zohar*, Tikkun 21, page 60a: "One must conquer one's evil inclination, as it is stated: 'And conquer it,' until mastering it"), and it is said that "you are called men." The Mishnah*, at the end of Tractate Kiddushin* (see Tanya*, chapter 46, and Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, chapter 10, which comment on the expression "He sanctified us with His Commandments"), says: "I was created to serve my Creator." It is obvious that this service is the purpose of the creation of the world. Indeed, it is stated: "Hashem conceived the desire to have a dwelling place in the lower realms." One must therefore conquer what is found here — the great world in general, and the small world that is man in particular — so that they become fit to be the dwelling of Hashem and actually become so (all of this is explained in Sha'arei Orah*, chapters 7 and 8 of the discourse "He shall be led in a royal garment").

It follows that the action — yours in particular — spans two domains: that directed toward others and that directed toward yourselves. In fact, these two domains become four. One must act for "the other who is within the other" — reaching his depth — and also reveal one's own depth; and finally, address "the other" that one carries within oneself. I am indeed alluding to yourselves and to the profound dimension of your being.

You belong to the community of Chassidim* of Chabad*, and your profound action therefore concerns Chassidus* — strengthening and developing the classes for its study, since it is the profound teaching of the Torah* — the adoption of its practices and customs, enthusiasm and warmth for Torah* and mitzvos* in general. Furthermore, one must strengthen and develop classes on the revealed dimension of Torah*, and practice the mitzvos* scrupulously.

The same applies to the other person. For the revealed dimension of his being, one must lead him to study Torah* and practice mitzvos*. For his profound dimension, one must clearly explain and teach him — as it is stated, "You shall place before them" — the ideas, practices, and customs of Chassidus*. One must emphasize to him that in our era, "it is a mitzvah*" to reveal all of this. Every Jew is obligated to do so, and it is precisely in this way that "Yisrael* will be redeemed from exile in mercy" (see Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 26, and the Raya Mehemna* cited there), that we will merit the fulfillment of the promises: "All will know Me, from the smallest to the greatest," and "It shall come to pass afterward, I will pour out My spirit upon all flesh. Then your sons and your daughters shall prophesy."

As you know, all of this must be based on love of one's fellow. One must therefore direct one's efforts toward each and every individual, regardless of his current situation, which will undoubtedly improve. Indeed, "He Who fashions their hearts together" gives the assurance that "not one of them will be cast away" (see the laws of Torah* study of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 4, paragraph 3, of which the Kuntres Acharon* says: "This applies also to the teacher." See Tanya*, chapter 32).

This must also be based on love of Hashem. One must therefore lead each individual to love Him, which also means that one must fear Him.

Finally, this is based on love of Torah*, which must therefore be brought to every place.

I will cite another example of action directed toward others. One must deliver Chassidic* discourses in the synagogues, connect with the students of Yeshivos* in general and bring them Chassidus* in particular, connect also with the alumni of the Yeshivos* of Tomchei Temimim* or of other Yeshivos* who have already left these institutions, and disseminate the printed books and writings of our holy masters.

Several of these activities have already been introduced some time ago, in various ways, by Chassidim*. The youth of the Chabad* Association must strengthen and develop them, quantitatively and qualitatively, organize them methodically, so that their impact is increased.

Everything that lives grows and develops — including through its own forces and not solely through permanent external support. The same is true of your action. It will show you new domains of intervention. From time to time, you will intensify it. You will not content yourselves with what has been done until now. You will also take other initiatives.

* * *

In reality, as I stated at the beginning of this letter, all of this should be the endeavor of each individual, in accordance with the saying of the Alter Rebbe* (see letters no. 2199 and 2941), author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden dimension of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed dimension of the Torah*, according to which Chassidus* is the portion and inheritance of each and every person.

Gradually, the knowledge of Hashem develops, as our Sages* report (Zohar*, volume 1, page 118a): "When the era of Moshiach* draws near, it will come to pass that even children will know the secrets of the Torah*." And ultimately, "All will know Me." Nevertheless, those who have the merit of already devoting themselves to Chassidus*, the profound dimension of the Torah*, its practices and its ways, are more specifically charged with the holy mission of preparing the hearts, of disseminating its wellsprings* to all, until they reach the outside.

And those who possess more strength and enthusiasm, who are still limited in their engagement with worldly concerns, bear an increased responsibility in this matter. Moreover, "the result is commensurate with the effort" (see Tractate Kesubos* 66b and Tanya*, end of chapter 30).

Consequently, the young, who possess these two qualities — increased enthusiasm and limited engagement with worldly concerns — must be the first to take charge of all the details of these activities. They will be guided in this by the elders. One knows, indeed, what our Sages* say about what the elders destroy. How much more does this apply to what they build.

An assurance was given by the Heavenly Court (see the letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, at pages 122 and 123 of the Notes and Summaries on the Tanya*; see also letters no. 3100, 3461, 3640, 3711, and 3748) to those who undertake this activity. Because the Alter Rebbe*, founder of Chassidus* Chabad*, gave of himself completely, it was decreed that one would be victorious in everything pertaining to Torah*, fear of Hashem, and good conduct.

With my blessing for success in your sacred mission, with true joy,

M. Schneerson

* * *
